View Full Version : The nuke facts . . .

I am posting this in this forum cause ron and fez are talking about it, the bomb dropped on heroshima was 11 megatons, the largest warhead ever tested was 24 megatons, so you can see the 10 killaton is relatively small compared to the larger warheads.
If you see the blast of a nuke do not look directly at the flash, the intense heat and gamma rays would blind you.
The 10 killaton will flatten all structures within a half mile, but that does not mean buildings beyond the half mile radius will not be severly damaged.
The half life of radiation is 35 years, in this time span no life will exist within radiation effected areas.
Nuclear clouds will be created above the blast and drift with the jet stream and radioactive material will snow down from the cloud and cause a nuclear winter, the cloud will move wherever the winds are blowing.

think about the nuclear capabilities of peoples all over the world. the soviet union has disolved leaving smaller more volatile governments in possession of them. governments who would benefit by selling, trading, ect., these weapons of mass destruction. we all live with someone else's finger on the button....

But think about it, was a nuclear weapon necessary to end ww2?, we used the nuke has soon as we had it, its having the power to destroy the world 100 times over, but who is going to push the button first?

1)I often think about a bomb going off in NYC...I usually think its just crazy talk, and no one would ever do it cause NY is just too awesome, and too much a symbol of all that humans can achieve. Now I think otherwise...its pretty scary. For once I feel that it really sucks to be a New Yorker.
2) Giambi will get severely injured, knocking him out of the season and ending the Yankees pennant hopes.
3) Brownies sound good...are they "special" brownies?

PBS did a web page that would show the damage radius from a nuclear blast, and you can decide the location that it would detonate.
<a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bomb/sfeature/mapablast.html">Map a Nuclear Blast</a>
The only problem is you cannot choose anything other than the three choices they have (1 megaton pressure damage, 1 megaton fallout and 25 megaton pressure damage). But it's still pretty cool to check out. 1 megaton would destroy everything in about a 3 or so mile radius. If the distance to damage ratio is linear, the damage radius would be .03 miles or so from a 10 kiloton weapon, but it's probably exponential. Anyhow, have fun blowing places up....

Some Corrections amd Comments; mine are in brackets...
I am posting this in this forum cause ron and fez are talking about it, the bomb dropped on heroshima was 11 megatons
[actually the Hiroshima yield was approx. 16 kilotons; meaning the equivalient of 16,000 tons of TNT; a Megaton is 1,000,000 tons of TNT. So; in effect, a 1 Megaton bomb is 1,000 times strong than a 1 kiloton bomb.]
the largest warhead ever tested was 24 megatons, so you can see the 10 killaton is relatively small compared to the larger warheads.
[Yep]
If you see the blast of a nuke do not look directly at the flash, the intense heat and gamma rays would blind you.
[If you happen to be looking in the direction of the flash; its too late; it will be the last thing you will ever see; youll be blind; if not dead a few seconds later.]
The 10 killaton will flatten all structures within a half mile, but that does not mean buildings beyond the half mile radius will not be severly damaged.
[Also correct; the initial blast is one thing; you also have to deal with the winds generated; the tremendous heat; the radiation dose you may recieve; the massive fires that will certainly result; and the widespread panic of thousands of blind and burned and injured.]
The half life of radiation is 35 years, in this time span no life will exist within radiation effected areas.
[the half-life of radiation depends on the element. Some elements have short half- lives of days; some heavier nuclei have half-lives measured in the billions of years.]
Nuclear clouds will be created above the blast and drift with the jet stream and radioactive material will snow down from the cloud and cause a nuclear winter, the cloud will move wherever the winds are blowing.
[one bomb will not create a nuclear winter; if it did; wed have a nuclear winter eve'ry time weve tested a bomb, and we've tested many. For serious meteorological damage, a full-blown nuclear exchange of many high-yield warheads would have to occur; but even without nuclear winter; the disruption of normal society would be tremendous.]

There is a BIG piece of misinformation here regarding half life.
Half life is not an absolute, rather it refers to the length of time it takes for unstable nuclides to sponaneously decay into other nuclides. Unstable nuclides are called radionuclides and their decay is called radioactivity.
To put it another way, some radionuclides are more unstable than others and decay at a faster rate. Each radionuclide decays at its own characteristic rate. This is known as its half-life. One half-life is the time taken for half the atoms in a quantity of a radionuclide to decay.
The unstable nature of uranium and plutonium make them ideal for atomic bombs (and energy) Their half life is very hard to even imagine - The half-life of uranium-235 is 713,000,000 years and for uranium-238 it is 4,500,000,000 years.
Imagine a product that will still kill people 4.5 billion years from now. Gives me the creeps.
I've listed some half life of some other radionuclides for comparison purposes.
Radon-222 4 days
Iodine-131 8 days
Krypton-85 10 years
Tritium (Hydrogen-3) 12 years
Strontium-90 29 years
Cesium-137 30 years
Americium-241 433 years
Radium-226 1,622 years
Plutonium-239 24,000 years
Uranium-235 713,000,000 years
uranium-238 4,500,000,000 years.
