View Full Version : Children and Intelligence
Horde King, has there been any studies that show if there is any correlation between the age at which a child begins speaking or is potty trained and their IQ as adults? My sister seems overly concerned about this, as her third child seems to be developing a bit slower than her previous two.
Thanks.

Gvac, as far as I know no two children develop at the same rate. It was probably a coincidence that her first two developed at a similar pace but by no means should she conclude that the third child isn't as intelligent as the first two. Tell her not to worry about time tables and just let the child prgress at his/her own pace. Pushing the child too hard because she thinks he/she should be developing more quickly can hurt the little one...
Besides..if I was your sister I'd be more worried about you and all these personalities ;) Pick one name and stick to it already :p lol

I probably could have gone to Harvard if it weren't for the fact I wore diapers until I was 5...

You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
And you swooned
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon

I can't recall reading any such study.
IVY correctly pointed out that children develop at different rates both phsycially and mentally. When a child goes for a checkup, the doctor notes his progress on a chart resemling a bell curve. Most kids develop in the middle range in most areas but some develop faster in one area than another.
Eventually nearly everyone catches up. Based on personal observation and annecdotal evidence I don't think there is a relationship b/w toilet training, speaking and intelligence.
For example, one child who tested higher than the siblings in IQ spoke at a later age than the siblings.
Kids develop within a wide range and unless there are serious problems which your pediatrician should have detected, the kids will walk, talk, grow and poop on their own schedule.
