Man cuts tongue off to mark election win
An Indian man cut off his tongue after hearing a politician had been re-elected as Chief Minister of a state assembly.
A volunteer for the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party made the pledge of support for the party's chief secretary before elections in Tamil Nadu.
The politician, Jayalalithaa Jayaram, told the man he shouldn't make such "dangerous vows".
The Times of India says the man, named only as Raja, took his family from Nagapattinam to the Tirumala shrine, in Tirupati, to carry out the promise after the election.
He then offered his tongue to Lord Venkateswara, the presiding deity at Tirumala shrine.
Jayalalithaa invited Raja and his family to her house to warn them against such actions.
She also gave them 25,000 Rupees (about œ360) and asked the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party trust to pay his medical expenses.
The newspaper doesn't say what condition Raja is now in.
