If there is a situation where an individual has been hurt by another person, say in a romantic sense, is it right to try to take out some sort of revenge on the person that hurt the other person?

Nothing violent or serious, but is it wrong to commit revenge, in either that situation, or just in general?

SUNNDOGGY8 - I'm sure you're aware of the axiom that, "There are no such things as absolutes." How true. In some situations revenge is appropriate and justified in others it is not.

The concept of revenge was codified as far back as Babylonian King Hammurabi (around 1750 BC) who wrote "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

If you're into the Bible, there are numerous examples of God taking revenge against Man for some imagined slight. (You'd think a God would be above such pettiness. Go figure.)

The main benefit of revenge is that it can bring peace of mind and closure to the family and loved ones of the victims.

That's one reason why I'm strongly in favor of capital punishment. And, yes I'm aware of all the inane arguments against it. Of course killing a murderer won't bring the victim back, but it sends the message to the family and to society at large that the life of the scumbag criminal is not worth a fraction of the worth of the person or people he killed. That's why so many of the family members of the Oklahoma bombing want to see McVeigh die.

Regarding the argument that capital punishment does not deter crime, that's just plain crap. It's 100% effective in preventing the person killed from ever killing again.

Vigilantism is also a form of revenge and as any Charles Bronson fan or reader of Batman comics knows, it's very effective. After all, criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot.

Revenge for being hurt emotionally, from the dissolution of a romantic relationship or the like? No way! There is no conceivable way to justify revenge in a situation like this.

It's a natural response to want to lash out and hurt someone who hurt you, but we are more than our natural instincts. Animals act on blind responses; but we are Homo sapiens, thinking man. (Yes that's the definition).

As thinking Man (generic term including women) we can and must use our intellect to understand that it is impossible to go through life without being hurt on an emotional level. I doubt there is a person who was not hurt romantically at least once in their life.

So what do we do when someone hurts us? There are two choices. The first, is to talk to the person, explain how you feel and why you are hurt. Sometimes this will elicit an apology, which will make you feel better. It's a nice thought and sometimes it does happen, but more often, we just have to suck it in, grin and bear it, and move on with our lives. It is not an easy thing to do, especially when the hurt involves matters of the heart, but we all know already that life is not always easy.

Revenge should be saved for serious offenses when it is unquestionably called for.

HK: I am against capital punishment because I do not trust the goverment, and it does go against my religious beliefs. If capital punishment is restored in NY, it would become a nightmare. The wealthy and affluent can buy their freedom, while the poor will suffer.

HECKLER - I understand your concerns and they are certainly valid. For an excellent treatise of your point of view I recomend the book, "The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison."

The biggest flaw I see with your argument is that NY reinstated capital punishment in 1995. I do not see any evidence of the "nightmare" you refer too.

From the perspective of the victim the only nightmare is that these animals are still alive.

Did you know that the average time served for a 25 year sentence for murder is 6 (SIX!) years. It makes their crime into a joke.

Have you ever noticed that almost all religions that frown upon capital punishment, make exceptions when the killing is done in the name of God. (Islamic Jihads, the Salem Witch Trials, The Crusades, The Spanish Inquisition, The slaughter of 40,000 Aztec when their Chief, (never having seen a book before) threw a Bible on the floor. There are tons of others, but those examples come immediately to mind.) More people are killed in the name of God than for any other reason.

I guess this is something about which we'll have to agree to disagree.

Well, NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Did anyone else think that the Children's Crusade (between the fourth and fifth crusade) was the funniest thing ever? (Perhaps my upbringing is showing, lol)

Sunndoggy-
I belive what comes around goes around- I feel whatever you put out in this life good or bad comes back 3fold. So revenge is pointless because the person will eventually get theirs in the end. It's Karma man Karma lol :)

girl germs-thanks for the quote...:)

I think you're all right...it's true that hurting someone because you were hurt by them is wrong...it's just that at times of being hurt, everything in a person's mind can feel confused, scewed, and just in need of lashing out...

Thanks :)

Horde King,

You bring up some very good and true points about capital punishment, and I will admit I am on the fence about it being right or wrong; just or unjust. I only have one problem with it, and this usually keeps me from being pro-Death Penalty.

All I know is if someone was to be killed in an attepmt for justice on my behalf, and If I were asked to be the one to do the actual act of killing the person would/could I? I don't know if I could, and to ask someone else to do it for me just doesn't seem right.

*and one more point, you brought up the issue that actual time served is 6 years for people sentanced to serve life, that is a problem with the system and calling for Capital punishment won't resolve that issue.

*and the issue of it detering crime, it is to my understanding it deters premeditated killings and not "in the moment" killings, which most murders are. It is to my understanding as well that in the when a murder is commited in the spur of the moment, then thought of any types of consequences, including death penalty, are thrown right out the window.

As for me, I'd like all capital punishment to take place in Thunderdome. I've got 5 minutes to do my worst, but he/she has a fair chance to run (or bounce) away.

Although, once again, things would be much easier if I chose who lives and who dies.

Finally, I think Girl Germs died. I blame the military-industrial complex.

GIRLGERMS - Two wrongs might not make a Wright but you know what two Wrights make? An airplane!

(rim shot)

Were do you get the idea that killing murderers and other of that ilk is wrong. In my view it's right. Moreover, by not killing them we are condoning their behavior, making us accomplices to their heinous acts.

The only problem with capital punishment is that there is not nearly enough of it.
