For me it had to be that one part of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, when Pee Wee is in that truck with Large Marge. She tells him the story of the person who died on that "very same road on a night very much like tonight" and then says, "and he looked like...THIS!" And her face gets all wacky. Seeing that scene now isn't scary, but then I would totally be freaked out cause of it! :)

The scene in "The Shining" where Danny is on the powerwheels bike and you see momentary flashes of the evil dead twins is the freakiest thing EVER.

heckler you got it.

jaws and carrie, you forgot when roy schneider is chumming...

the hand scene in carrie was ripped off in the 1st friday the 13th. when jason jumps out of the water.

the 1st halloween had some good scenes that make you jump.

night of the living dead when they see the body upstairs and when the zombies are eating the people in the truck. I saw that when I was about 6yrs old. it was a double feature (old school) with willard (the rat movie) and we had to walk home past a cemetary not to tramatic for a little kid. lol...

I am watching fatal attraction right now. Glen Close was one sick bitch.

The hobbling scene in Misery.. I still cant watch it.

the original tales from the crypt with Joan collins. Scene where blind guys make the new manager of their day care chose between running through a very very narrow hall of razor blades or being eaten by starving german shephards.

One movie that scared me when I was a kid I think was called Jason and the Argonauts. These skeletons with swords were attacking them. It had a lot of weird scenes in it but that one always stuck out. Also a TV show called Friday the 13th The Series scared me.

Man, you guys nailed a bunch of great ones:

- When A Stranger Calls
- The Shining (the twins)
- Poltergeist (clown under the bed)
- Carrie (hand coming out of the grave)
- Jaws (dead guy's head underwater)
- The dental torture scene in "Marathon Man". (I'm cringing just thinking about it)

The ones coming to my mind right now aren't so much scary as they are disturbing. Maybe that's sort of the same thing, I dunno:

- Not really old school, but there was a visually disturbing mass murder scene in Halloween 6, in an operating room, all done in strobe lighting, which made it creepy.

- The ghost of the little girl in Dementia-13 was creepy.

- Not a horror movie, but the curb scene in American History X is probably the most disturbing thing *EVER*. I can't emphasize how much I hate that scene.

- There was a great disembowelment scene in Event Horizon.

- The aunt with spinal menengitis in Pet Sematary.

- The guy being buried alive in The Serpent and the Rainbow.

- The ending of Maniac when the mannequins (sp?) with the scalps on them all come to life and tear the guy apart.

- Several scenes in Exorcist 3 were *incredibly* scary. A terribly underrated movie that's pretty hard to find.

J‰rry.

I've had few sceness I thought were disturbing, though not necessatily scary :

I remember when Haloween II was just coming out and the commercial a few weeks before was a teaser. They just showed a pumpkin slowly opening as that trademark music was playing. The closer it got to when the flick was actually in the theaters, the more they'd show you the pumpkin opening. Finally it opened and there was a skull in it. I think it gave me nightmares for a bit because I was so excited about seeing the movie.

The scene in Texas Chainsaw when the guy first walks into the house. He goes up to that silver dppr, it flies open, and Leatherface brains him with that hammer. That was a really strong scene, unsettling if you may, in my opinion.

But the one that gave me biggest nightmare that I remember when I was a kid was a movie called " Horror Express ". It was this cheesy 70's flick with Peter Cusshing. Some nonsense about an thses dudes finding a caveman and bringing him back to England or something. The creepy part was that this creature would look at you and make your eyes bleed. I remember vividly waking up in the middle of the night scared shitless. Very wierd. Its on DVD I should check it out again.

Oh and who could forget the head explosion scene in " Scanners " ??
