any idea what causes it? i've done it for years and years, and my dentist says that it wears away my teeth - which i'm sure it does. is there any way to reduce or get rid of teeth grinding other than those stupid mouth guards?

TRAILER - Grinding your teeth can be a result of stress and/or frustration.
It's extraoridnarily bad not just to your teeth but to your entire jaw. In fact in can cause a problem called TMJ which at times requires oral surgery.
The mouth guards are a pain but they're effective and relatively cheap. Don't consider getting one over the counter. Get one custom made from your dentist.

I don't know anything about teeth grinding, but I know that that sound effect they play on the commercial is maddening (WFAN or WNEW, I ferget). It's worse than nails on a chalkboard. If I was gay and and your lover, I'd kick you out of bed. I'm neither, however, and I think we can both count our blessings for that.
