View Full Version : Twins
Is there a genetic predisposition for having twins? That is, does it "run in the family"?
My mother's mother is an identical twin, and so is my father. Does this increase my chances of fathering twins, or is it a completely random genetic mutation?

G,..Ah, twins.
Yes, it does "run in the family"...but Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen already have one. Sorry!
You can try and adopt them, and then clone, ( underground, that is ) WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL QUESTION? ..

GVAC - There is indeed a genetic component to twins.
Faternal (non-identical) twins involves two separate sperm fertilizing two separate eggs. In order for this to occur, the woman must release two eggs a month instead of one. That is genetic exclusively on the maternal side. Interestingly, the gene for this is on only one X chromosome. If both X chromosomes contain the gene, infertility results.
Identical twins are much more complex. It involves a single egg and sperm splitting in two and forming two genetically identical embryos. I believe, but am not positive that men as well as women have a gnetic disposition that increases the likelihood of this occuring. Again, I'm not certain of this, so, if anyone knows for sure please post it.

Let me tell you it is genetic.I have twin cousins. One of them had kids(twins). My grandfather was a twin.My Uncles are twins.Im a fraternal twin. the woman must release two eggs a month and i have younger sisters that are fraternal triplets <P>

Yes, as I said, fraternal twins are clearly genetic.
Multiple fraternal births in general are genetic as well. Obviously in cases of triplets three separate eggs are released and fertilized.

I think the one with the goatee is the evil twin. Of course, if one has a soul patch, he's probably just mildly grumpy.
