I'm really afraid about posting the same thing twice. Apparently, you're not. Seriously though, dying is a part of living. I lost a few friends and family members last year, and believe me, although I miss them, life goes on. If you're not into a religious way of coping, good neither am I. But may i suggest you watch "Crossing Over with John Edward" ? It's on cbs here in ny from 3-4 weekdays. Although I consider myself a sceptic, by the end of each show he has me convinced that people do go somewhere and are still with us if we need em. The important thing is to make the most out of the time u have with the people you love. And, if you believe certain religions, AND John Edward, you'll see them again when YOU die.

I heard that guy has super sensitive hidden mics around the studio that picks up every converstion.
I watch the show and he looks like he knows what he's doing but I would love to attend the show just to see what he has to say about me and my life. As far as being afraid to die Mikey all I gotta say is "who wants to live forever?"

Well, the way I look at it is that you're a nice meal for worms after you die and that's it. It sounds grim, but it gives one more of that carpe diem joie de vivre. If you believe in all that religion nonsense, live a good life and maybe you'll go to heaven.
Although I consider myself a sceptic, by the end of each show he has me convinced that people do go somewhere and are still with us if we need em.

That "crossing over" stuff is a bunch of nonsense. He might've fooled Billy Staples, but how hard can that be?

MikeyClifton - I'm an atheist and do not believe in any kind of afterlife.

A fear of dying is really a self-protective mechanism that ensures you don't take unnecessary risks, go to the doctor when needed and try to live healthy.

Carried to an extreme however, there can be all manners of problems. For example, being too afraid of dying makes it hard to enjoy living.

Once you're dead you're past the point of fear or of caring. If you're religious, death is the gateway to the true world.

Fear of one's own death can be dealt with by looking at it from both a religious and atheistic point of view.

Fearing another person's death is much harder to overcome, b/c when they die, you're still around to miss them. Yes, it's true that death is part of the cycle of life, but it doesn't comfort those left behind.

As a parent, these fears, which everyone has to some degree, are magnified 100 times when you have children. The worst conceivable thing that could possibly happen to a parent is the death of his or her child. All parents fear this to one degree or another.

Since you indicate that you're "worried" (present tense) about losing a loved one, the obvious question is whether you have a friend or relative with a terminal illness or if the fear is more generalized.

How do we deal with this fear? It's difficult In many instances, it requires sublimation - removing the active fear from your conscious mind. That's a deliberate process (as opposed to repression) that basically protects the mind, by deliberately not dwelling or thinking about the fear.

John Edwards has been debunked many times by many different people. Nonetheless, the idea behind the show can be comforting.

Listen, as a civilized people, we are all obsessed with death and what comes after it.

I don't feel that there's an afterlife like christians envision it, but I have to believe that there's a part of us that makes us unique and it would be sad to find out that our "soul" rots away with the rest of our body.

I live by a code, and I accept my natural death. I want to go out at 65, with my faculties somewhat intact, with my own children and grandchildren and die in my sleep.

My dream, though, is to go into space before I'm dead and see how far I can get into the final frontier before I die.

Some people buy into the god thing and are able to get a lot of comfort from it.

Others are more sceptical and don't have this comfort, but we try instead to live our life to make it count.

Even is you are an atheist, just admit you have no idea what happens when you die. No matter your creed, don't try to take a stance on something you can nver understand.

I can promise you this- it won't be bad when you die.

We live in the present, we dream of the future and we learn eternal truths from the past.

DRAGON - While no one can tell with certainty what happens after they die, it is nonetheless valuable in many ways to take a stance regarding the issue of God.

For those who believe, the belief of a Supreme Being controlling all destiny in a fashion they cannot comprehend is comforting.

For those who believe that God cannot exist, it affords them opportunity to question their values and morals and separate beiing a good person from religious dogma. Secular humanists are big into this. There is comfort, and knowledge to be gained as well in the assurance that you are the master of your own destiny.

So, we just pick whichever option fits our temperment and emotions and focus on the here and now.

No one should do things for a reward. I believe in God, but when I do something I believe is good or bad, the thought of some kind of punishment or payment never comes into my thinking.

Staying with the topic, I do not claim to know what the afterlife has in store for anyone specifically, nor do you, which is why I can admit that it is mostly a mystery to me.

We live in the present, we dream of the future and we learn eternal truths from the past.
