How do you lose a tampon?

Hi Horde King. This has been troubling me for quite some time now, and I was hoping you may be able to shed some light as to how this could have happened.
One night when I was in college, my roommate and I went out and did the usual thing of drinking ourselves into a stupor until the bars closed. We then went home with our boyfriends. The next afternoon, my roommate came into my room with a look of confusion upon her face. She told me that she had sex with her boyfriend last night, but couldnt remember if she took out her tampon or not. She tried searching for it, did it in front of her full length mirror in hopes of finding that little white string. She had no luck. That night after dinner, (now mind you, she has now had this blood soaked tampon stuck in her for well over 16 hours at this point) we took her to the emergency room. It took 2 doctors and 45 minutes before they were able to fish it out of her. She said it stunk up the whole room.
My questions are 1 - how could you not remember about your tampon, even if you are drunk, and 2 - how could the guy not feel it as he's trying to stick it in?

JEN - Although a string on a tampon can break and theoretically be pushed further back into the vagina, it still can't be "lost" in the sense of being irretrevable.

The vagina itself leads to the cervix, but there is only a pin size opening in the cervix separating the vagina and utterus.

Needless to say a tampon can't fit through a pin sized hole no matter how forcibly it's pushed. So your girlfriend's tampon wasn't lost, but rather it was still in the vagina.

I suspect that her worry about losing it, made her involuntaily tense up, and probably did not allow her sufficient lubrication to insert her fingers and look for the string. The doctor no doubt used some kind of lubrication and one of those metal torture machines to spread her vaginal opening and allow retreival.

Of much more concern is the length of time the vagina was in. Remind your friend that tampons MUST be changed regularly or the fatal Toxic Shock Syndrome may occur.

I usually lose my tampons by driving all reckless-like in a 70's muscle car. "Those tampons are following me, lose 'em!"

Either that or put 'em in a dryer.
