I know a little about wound healing.
The itch you're feeling is caused by the growth of new cells underneath a scab that formed over the wound. New skin cells are growing under there, and as they form a new layer of skin, then the scab becomes more tightly stretched over this area. That's what itches.
oh! i thought it was because i had fleas.

I love picking at it while it's healing. Sometimes I feel like that makes it heal faster. I also love pouring that hydrogen peroxide thing on it and watching it fizz up!! Whoa!!

Most of the information I researched on this issue involved itching on newly growing skin in burn victims.
That's a sad yet fascinating topic of it's own, but the reasons behind the itching should be the same.
The itch sensation may be caused by nerves regenerating or from excessively dry skin (caused by the lack of natural oil production). Oil glands may have been damaged by the wound.
