First off, why is it when your younger you wake up earlier? And when you get older you tend to sleep alot longer? Is it because you go to sleep earlier? Or does it have to with age. Second Is a problem of mine, Alot of times when I try to fall asleep, I get this feeling in my eyes where I can feel my pulse. Is this a normal feeling?

In vino veritas

<marquee>There's a place in the world for the angry young man With his working class ties and his radical plansHe refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl,He's always at home with his back to the wall. And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost,And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross-And he likes to be knowns as the angry young man. </marquee>

TONY - These are some good questions, but they have to be broken down a little further.

An infant wakes up early, goes to sleep early and whenever the parent get a chance to have sex or sleep themselves you can bet the infant is going to get up. Infants need a lot of sleep, but not straight through the day (or night). Instead they sleep off and on throughout the day and night. After a couple of months, they're usually able to settle down into a normal nocturnal sleep cycle - normal that is for all but us night owls.

Toddlers and children need lots of sleep and studies show they don't get enough. They wake up around the same time most days b/c it's a pattern or habbit that they've acquired.

As children age and start school, homework, clubs and other interests consume valuable sleep time. Until adolecense is over a person should get 8 - 10 hours of sleep a night.

Starting from early adulthood the need for sleep diminishes to some extent. Interestingly, I've read studies showing that there are just as many negative effects from sleeping too much as not sleeping enough. (Too much sleep was linked to decreased longevity!)

Then there is the fact that some people just need less sleep than others. Some function fine on just 3 or 4 hours a night, others need at least twice that.

The elderly need the least amount of sleep. Insomnia is a common problem among the elderly. My personal feeling is that it may be a reaction to the upcoming end of life, but to my knowledge there has never been any research on this.

Now, go clean your room, and get straight to bed!
