You ask an excellent question, but I want to examine it from a different approach.

Your basic premise is that since "curse words" are dumped racial slurs should be as well.

Why should curse words be dumped? There has been no scientific study conducted showing that exposure to these horrible words (sarcastic) has any effect on kids. Is there a kid in the world who hasn't heard, shit, cunt, fuck, cocksucker, tits, shit (I forget the other two "naughty" words).

It makes no sense to have to censor these words. In a recent call I learned that now you can't even say masturbate or penis and vagina. Medical terms. It's ridiculous.

As far as racial slurs, I would think that they are much more offensive than any word imaginable, b/c it's meant to degrade and hurt and it's affects have been shown to produce many problems including the perpetuation of racism, decreased self-esteem and feelings of not measuring up to some fictitious White Middle Age Guy.

On the other hand I find it disturbing that so many groups are deliberately insisting on being acknowledged as different and diverse from American culture. I don't approve of the term "African American" or "Jewish American" or "WASP American" or "6 foot tall American." We should all be referred to as Americans. Culture is wonderful, even indispensible, but not at the expense of forgetting that we're a nation and one people united.

Personally, I think it's amazing that you can say pussy, twat, and dick as long as you're not referring to the actual part, but you can't say vagina or penis ever. I'm trying to think of what the justification behind that might be, but I can't come up with anything. And I think South Park summed up it best when they said

The whole situation is like one giant clusterfuck...I swear, it's like the FCC are a bunch of old school Southern Dandies throwing darts blindfolded at a giant list of possibly "dirty" words...the racial stuff is just never justified, and I actually like the fact that people can't swear rampantly on the radio...I curselike a sailor all the time, but if they could on the radio, whenever someone got mad, or a caller was pissed, it would just be "Fuck this muthafucking thing right fucking over fucking here" and that gets old REAL fast...at least not being able to swear forces people (Especially the callers) to think a little more creatively when they call...

So, yeah, for thousands of years, we live in tribes running around humpin' and pickin' berries all day (sigh). But fast-forward a millenia or two and humans have somehow managed to divide the globe into a bunch of politicized geographic units called "nation-states". Yes, another wonderful facet of our technological and social advancement during the evoluton of this, the most asinine of asinine race. Here, inside of our nations, we are taught to identify with our fellow country-persons on the basis of similarities in cultural heritage, linguistic patterns, ethic relationships and/or geographical proximity. And with each nation, we get a state; the final and ultimate authority through which the government and all its' component parts operate. And this, the nation-state, becomes the focal point of many-an-identity. I am an individual human, but I become "Canadian". Not "Mexican". Not "Australian". Not "Nigerian". Weird, no? The whole world has become cut and divided. How convenient for the few who occupy the powerful spots in the class of the economic elites: governments to rule, laws to create, cultures to oppress, people to exploit, identities to inject through its' media outlets and systems of education. So we're all kept dumb to what's going on. Sure, we have certain "freedoms" in our nation-states... like choosing between Coke and Pepsi! Or between Baywatch and Cops! Or if we want to be factory workers or department store managers or teachers or waste-disposal engineers! We presuppose that the nation-state acts in terms of the "national interest". And surprise, surprise! "National interest" becomes a defence of the existence of the nation-state and of the ay it operates. So-called "national interest" is more than just partly responsible for the continuation and regeneration of a system that exists on exploitation and the fucking over of human rights. "National interest" is the justification for crap like Operation Desert Storm, the war on Aboriginals, NAFTA, the decimation of the environment, racist immigration policies or, say, the massive nuclear arms arsenal just a two-hour drive south of our city. So when some flag-waving patriot tells us to "love it or leave it!", because we're critical of "our", or any other nation-state's foreign/ domestic policies, I fell like snippin' off me plums and hangin' up me Chomsky reader! Ha.ha..ha....ha......ha........ha..........sigh.

I'm agreeing with HordeKing. Racial slurs are hateful words. Of couse you can use swears to spew hate too, but I think the real problem here are the Penis, Vagina words. Come on, they're body parts.

I will say that swears will be on the air in the future. They'll let one on one year, another another year. They could only be said between 2am-5am, then 12am-5am, you get the picture. It'll happen.

It makes no DIFFERENCE how hateful racial slurs are. People use them and people are going to use them. The thing about dumping curses is that it forces you to be more intelligent about getting your point across rather than swearing like a neanderthol. Every racist in the world gets UBER creative when they use their slurs because on the radio they want to make themselves laugh. Getting Ani DiFranco'd is almost a badge of honor these days and not a reprimand the way it's meant to be. Personally I say let all the racists make their jokes. Polite racism is the worst kind. At least with the blatantly racist I can get a better idea on who's wearing the hood.
