sometimes when i'm just sitting around, not doing anything, i hear things. like when people are talking around me, i only hear some words. and then i hear names. if someone brings me up, i'll always hear it, even if i have my headphones on.

so i'm wondering if this is some subconscious thing thing.

Good hearing.

Sometimes I can hear people talking all the way from the back of my house. If my mother said something in a faint voice, my ears would pick it up. And my ears aren't big at all.

Any parent knows about selective hearing. (Many wives, even pre-children know it from their husbands as well).

We can tune out a lot of the world around us. In fact, we're trained from birth to think about things and interpret them according to a rigidly designed set of rules.

We often filter out things we are not actively trying to listen too and things we consider unimportant. When a key word or phrase is heard, it get's processed and suddenly you're aware that people are talking about you or some other mattter you're interested in.

Sorry, but I think the technical term for that condition is schizophrenia.

Well, join the club. I hear Kit fron Knight Rider talking to me all friggin' day long.

Rooster, "selective hearing" is quite different from aural hallucinations. Although hearing voices that aren't there is a serious pychosis, it is not necessarily related to schizophrenia.

Of course such a person needs treatment on an emergent basis.
