Cinco de Mayo, although not Mexican Independence day, is a very imortant holiday that should be celebrated by Mexicans and Americans alike. The short history goes a little something like this...On May 5, 1862, France tried to invade an already independent Mexico, and claim it as their own. Somehow, the tattered and heavily outnumbered Mexican army was able to defend themselves against the highly trained, enormous French army. With the eventual help of the U.S. (Union) army, the French were soundly defeated and chased back to Europe. Obvious big deal for Mexico, but why should Americans care? Several historians believe that once the French had succesfully conquered Mexico, they would head north, easily taking territory as they went. America was involved in a fierce inner battle at the time (a little thing I like to call the Civil War), and we may not have been able to stop them. At the very least, the outcome of our own war might have been very different. So, although it's mainly a holiday we stole from Mexico, it's a part of our own history too...Oh yeah, plus it's another reason to get drunk off your asses, so...HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO EVERYBODY!!
