hi hk...
i know that coffee is not great for you, especially when consumed in large quantities. and i know that the caffeine is bad. but i'm wondering - is there something else about coffee (besides caffeine, since you could have decaf) that makes it bad?

i have a friend who drinks a lot of coffee and has some stomach problems which i am convinced are caused at least in part by his massive coffee intake. would that make sense?

thanks :)

Most studies have concluded that caffeine is bad for you. In fact some articles put it in a catagory similar to nicotene.

New research suggests that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop bowel cancer, restricted airways and supposedly that it can help pre-term babies recuperate from an operation.

I'm very sceptical about the last claim b/c numerous studies have shown that coffee increases the risk of a miscarriage. It also pomotes osteoporosis.

Coffee is also linked to strokes and high cholesterol.

On the other hand a 15 year longitudinal study at Harvard showed coffee drinkers were less likely to comitt suicide leading to speculation about the possible antidepressant qualities of caffeine.

As for decaffeinated coffee, the results look pretty grim. Obviously, the filtration process cuts back on most of the caffeine, but what remains from the process has deletorious effects which pose their own health risks.
