I have a problem that I just can't figure out. I get pleasure out of putting people down and starting trouble (as you can see). I talk to my therapist about this but she hasn't helped me to see why I do this. Can you maybe tell me why?

I know its a bit new agey (very), but "the celestine prophecy" has a great theory on why people feel the need to hurt the feelings of others. If you have time you should pick it up. the plot's a bit weak, but the theories inside are extraordinary

DANI - The easy answer is that your behavior satisfies a need in you. In other words, you put people down b/c it makes you feel good.

The reason behind this is much more difficult to figure out. It's likely that it was a learned behavior. At one point insulting someone made you feel good and you adapted that strategy to try to boost your self esteem.

It's not satisfactory at all for your shrink to avoid discussing this. Insist that you talk about this important facet of your personality.
