Heya. I'm 16 and i've been cracking my knuckles every once in a while for a few years now, usually subconciously, and ive always been told its a bad habit and i will regret it in the future but i never understood exactly why. am i going to get arthritis at an early age or something?

i've always wondered this myself. I actually do it on a regular basis, at least once an hour.

I heard a doctor say once that the arthritis thing is an old wive's tale. There's a fluid in your knuckles and little air bubbles build up in the fluid. Cracking knuckles is simply releasing the air bubbles from the fluid. Apparently it's harmless though. I'm sure second opinions will follow.

But I've also heard that every time you crack your knuckles, a priest molests a child. I don't know if that's true or not. Maybe it's every time a priest cracks his knuckles, he's about to.

Current thought is that cracking knuckles, etc, will NOT do any harm.

As noted by CHEFPITT, finger joints are comprised of two bones covered in cartilage and held together by ligaments. The synovial fluid lubricates the spaces between the bones. This fluid contains gas (carbon dioxide and nitrogen).

When you crack your joints, the bones on either side of the joint space separate, reducing pressure on the synovial fluid. This allows the gas to form bubbles that quickly expand and pop, causing the characteristic "popping" sound you hear.

i LOVE cracking my knuckles! i do it all the time, especially when i am nervous but i can only seem to crack the middle and index fingers. the pointer just won't crack.
