I don't think they have sold out, but everyone says they have. I like their old stuff and their new stuff. What do you think?

I hate when people bitch about bands that "sold out", like Aerosmith and Metallica. Times change, and if a band wants to stay current, they have to conform to whatever's popular with the kids, cause they're the ones buying the albums. I've heard people say "They should have just called it quits and left with some dignity", but if a band loves what they do, why should they become has-beens just to please some whiny asshole who's stuck in 1992?
I've been an Aerosmith fan as long as I can remember, and I think some of their best stuff was from the "sellout" days, like Get a Grip. It's one of my all-time favorite albums.

It depends on what you consider selling out to be...

I like Aerosmith and their sound has evolved, rather than selling out.
With that said, recording a Dianne Warren song is a sell out. Performing with Brittney and N'Sync is selling out.

I don't blame them so much for that, because their career was totally in the shitter, and that was a fairly innovative idea at the time. What I think was their point of no return was that god-awful song, written by shitmeister Diane Warren, they did for Armageddon.
Was the Run DMC thing creative? Yes
Did they sell out? Yes.
Do they suck? Yes.
Can I think of a more overrated songwriting duo than Perry/Tyler? No.

for their storied past, the amargeddon song blew; the canon commercial was lame and the roller coaster was just pathetic
they were barely torlable as a third rate stones cover band in the 70s with a stable of FM staples ... and each year since their 80s return has just gotten sadder with the britney super bowl just the final straw

did they sell out? yes, i believe they did (every venue on their last 10 tours).
not for anything, but selling out = cashing in.
pride doesnt pay the bills and buy things, money does.
cant hate them for that.

I like Aerosmith but that song from Armageddon makes me want to puke. I prefer the old stuff
Did you know that there are at least 7 movies called "Armageddon" before that shitty one with the spawn of Tyler?

I never understood the concept of "selling out". Isn't the whole purpose of being an entertainer is creating art that both you and an audience enjoys? Whether it's on a wide level or narrow, it's what you are comfortable with.
Yes, they've sold their image and their songs to promote commercial products. But they aren't as brazen about it as KISS is, and to be honest, Perry and Tyler are incredibly talented.
I mean, they've done a couple of vanity projects that THEY wanted to do. The blues album, for example. That's not being a sell-out. Of course, they have like 8,000 greatest hits albums, and that's the definition of totally selling out. So who knows.
My opinion: with their longevity, they are entitled. They are one of the few bands that has retained the original lineup without major breakups or drama for 20+ years. (Toxic twins mess aside).

a GM sponsored roller coaster is very KISS like

OK, here's my list of sell-outs:
KISS
Eagles
Metallica
Rolling Stones (but I think they're entitled)
Neil Young (because he wrote a song about not selling out, then allowed a song of his to be used in a commercial 20 years later)
There's others. I need to think.

Led Zeppelin has a rollercoaster at the Hard Rock park. And GM's sponsorship doesn't go to Aerosmith, it goes to Disney. Disney pays Aerosmith to use their branding, GM pays Disney to advertise at the park as a sponsor. And Zeppelin "sold out" to GM as well.

sell out is thrown around by those that are too untalented or bitter due to failure to make it. what good is making music if nobody is going to listen to it?
a band is a business. like any other business, it doesnt last long unless if income < bills.
a record company will throw cash at maybe 100 bands a year. 90 out of those 100 will implode. so unless you make music that people will listen to and buy, the record company sees no need to throw excess cash at you.
being a musician, i have no problem selling out.
what? pay me to play an ibanez bass (which i despise badly) in liu of my 12 string? sure!, hand that fucker over.
pay me to wear puma instead of adidas (in korn's case)? sure im a size xl (now).
you can always go back to your roots once you've called it quits.

If you're still concerned about weight loss, Mike, the first thing you should do is lose at least 7 of those strings. Immediately.

your last sentence seems to negate the majority of your post
the way the music business has shifted, it's forced acts to find other outlets and marketing models to get their music heard ... it's become more acceptable to hear treasured songs hawk impotance pills, luxury cars and IRAs
aerosmith has sold out big time because they really suck, and have becom sad caricatures and tepid cliche of their former selves
they really don't seem to aging all that gracefully
