HK-

Recently I've started drinking nothing but water. I feel great, I look better and in that respect i guess what they say about drinking your 8 8-once glasses a day is true.
However, I also heard you can get such a thing as "Water Intoxication" where you're quite out of sorts from the water and you can even die. Now to me, this sounds like a total crock, but I wonder if you knew anything about this.
I also was wondering if we can isolate the elements of hydrogen and oxygen, why do we still have water shortages if technically we could "make" water?

You can drink too much water - but I've heard you'd have to drink a LOT to get water intoxication. I started drinking only water during the day instead of soda last year and its made a big difference in my energy level during the day. I drink about 3 liters of water a day (the big poland spring bottles) my fiances mother who's a nurse said that was a lot of water to drink, but as long as you also get enough salt its ok

the reason why we don't combine hydrogen and oxygen to make water and stop shortages is the resoures necesary for this far outweigh the water produced (hydrogen is expensive and hard to find, so is the power, so is free oxygen and they are all very volitile)

as for ODing on water, its virtually impossible. 1)since your drinking it, you can only take water in as fast as you can swallow, and it will be in your stomach 2) if somehow you get past this. your kidneys will piss the rest out (of course, this isn't that great for your body, but you'll know when to stop, your stomach will tell you)

granted, i'm not a doctor, but i think i'm on the button here

Heres a realted question, Your worried about water Intoxication, Im more concerned about dehydration. I drank about 2 gallons and I continue today to drink about a gallon of water . How much if Any water is my body getting? And Should I be pacing my self?

GWEN - Surprisingly there is a condition called "hyponatremia" that is often called water intoxication.

Generally it affects only endurance atheletes (like cyclists or long distance runners) or people engaged in vigerous physical activity in a hot environment.

As large quantities of water are consumed over the course of the event, plasma (the liquid part of blood) increases. This causes the salt content of the blood to become diluted. Simultaneously, the athlete is losing salt by sweating. Consequently, the amount of salt available to the body tissues decreases over time to a point where the loss interferes with brain, heart, and muscle function.

Huge quantities of water must be consumed for this to happen, usually past the point of comfort. Most people will not drink water when they already feel that their gut will burst from all the water already sloshing around in there.

Now, as to why we don't water from combining oxygen and hydrogen, the energy required to do so would outwiegh the energy output thus increasing entropy by reducing the amount of usable energy in the universe.

HIPPIE - Hydrogen isn't hard to find. It's the most common element in the universe.

TONY - Dehydration is much more realistic a threat for the vast majority of people, but you can't just drink water. You need to eat food too in order to replenish your electrolytes. Drinking 2 gallons of water a day seems excessive.

you are right, but hydrogen is still difficult to find: Hydrogen has a nasty habit of bonding with other atoms since it is so small and only needs one more electron to fill its outer ring. It is very rare to find hydrogen all by itself. in fact, i think the only way you can find pure hydrogen on earth in as H2 with a double bond

HIPPIE - I found a terrific website about hydrogen and the myriad of uses for it. http://pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/elements/1.html

The site confirmed that earth lacks pure hydrogen but is full of hydrogen compounds. I was unable to determine if pure hydrogen is necessary for these compounds like water to form. It would seem that impure hydrogen could be used, as the applications discussed demand an awful lot of hydrogen and since there is no or little floating around, the only form that's left is impure hydrogen; i.e. mixed with something else.

here are some water facts.

1. In 37% of Americans, the thrist mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

2. Even mild dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

3. lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

4. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of coloon cancer by 45%, plust it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Now, as to why we don't water from combining oxygen and hydrogen, the energy required to do so would outwiegh the energy output thus increasing entropy by reducing the amount of usable energy in the universe.
Are you serious? I mean, is this a joke or your actual reasoning? Allow me to introduce you to my close and personal enemy (and the enemy of all phyics students, and moreover, engineers) and that's the Second Law of Thermodynamics. (I think its the second one.)

Basically, the entropy in the universe NEVER decreases, and no matter WHAT you do, you can never get more energy output than input, NOR can you even get too close to as much as you put in. In fact, one of the definitions of the direction of time is that forward is the direction of increasing entropy.

As for the chemistry, you did say you weren't sure, but allow me to clear that up; for the most part, you WOULD need pure hydrogen. Most of the forms we find it in are fairly stable and it's strongly bonded to whatever its in a compound with. Breaking the hydrogen away would take a LOT of energy, and that's basically why we don't make water... if we put Hydrogen and Oxygen together, I'm pretty sure they'd naturally bond and release energy, because it takes energy to break water up into the components. Another thing is that Hydrogen and Oxygen gases are naturally diatomic, meaning you find them in H2 and O2, so that's another bond you have to break to get the party started. Hope I helped...

SEEYOUNEXTTUESDAY - I thought my response light and although said half in jest, it is a scientific fact.

Beginning physics students are routinely taught the immutable laws of thermodynamics. The portion of the second law, to which I refered is known as "the law of disorder" and states that although the amount of energy in the universe remains constant, the amount of usable energy is constantly decreasing.

Every time you expend energy you're getting less back than what you put into it. Usually that's not problematic b/c the lesser form of the energy is still useful to us.

The slow loss of energy has been analogized to the winding down of a spring. When it is completely stoped no movement occurs. Now according to open universe theorists like Hawking, this will result in a cold lifeless static universe. I prefer the model of the universe that's a bit out of vogue now - the closed model. In this scenerio, the final burst of energy is used to cause a big crunch which in turn can potentially yield another big bang.

i only have a basic knowledge of physics, so i'll have to answer in the terms i comprehend it best.

I kinda see the universe as a huge example of the taoist principle of yin/yang. Lets start at the big bang, which would be the active yang part, always expanding onward, like the universe "breathing out". but that energy is being spread out (as hk said "no longer usable"). eventually the universe reaches a point where it starts to contract, to "breathe in." This would be the yin phase. It draws all its energy in, until it can't contain it anymore, hense, another big bang, and the cycle repeats again, and endlessly.

HIPPIE - That's the way I prefer to see it, b/c it holds the possibility of rebirth

As I mentioned though, the closed universe theory is out of vogue now that Hawking changed his mind to the open model. If he's right there will be no big crunch, just expansive cold unmoving emptyness

According to Human Anatomy and Physiology. 2nd ed. Dubuque, IA: WCB, 1981. by Dr. John W. Hole,
"Although the urinary bladder may hold as much as 600 ml of urine, the desire to urinate is usually experienced when it contains about 150 ml."

Now being of a modest income for quite sometime...I learned that buying a six pack of beer, no brand name in particular...and drinking it like a beer every 15 minutes or so...and chugging water makes you totally wasted...I dunno I heard the water forces the alcohol into the bloodstream quicker..I dunno much about physiology or the anatomy of humans, but it worked the few times I did it...one draw back...drinking beer already makes me whiz like a banshee...so the water dun help much

I dun see the problem...
