Ask a straight person what the queerest show on TV is, and you'll get a list more trite than Mr. Blackwell's (see Will & Grace). Real queers know the gayest hour on television is a perversely pleasing cable show called Trading Spaces.
The Learning Channel's breakaway hit, based on the U.K. phenomenon Changing Rooms, takes two couples, gives them a $1,000 budget, an over-the-top interior designer and two days to screw up a room in a friend's house.

What's the attraction for the rainbow connectors? The obvious reason is that not since the glory days of Dynasty have queers had the chance to howl at so many bad color schemes and scheming queens in one hour.

There's a bit more closeted explanation why queers love this show: Homos are often denied the back slaps of mainstream society (marriage, children, you name it) and we often turn our homes into superior shelters from the encroaching elements (i.e. torch-wielding neighborhood straights). We love our dwellings, and this show takes that idea and adds its own twist of camp.

But the real reason we obsess over TS is its gayish crew (not one soul is out on the show, but it's sure fun to handicap them).

Take designer Vern Yip (please, take him!). The only Asian on television--not counting the Iron Chefs--zippy Yip has a penchant for red lacquer, live bamboo and telling everybody what to do. A one-man demolition team, La-Vern also has a weird love-hate thing for Trading Space's hunky carpenter Ty Pennington. Speaking of Ty Boy, I'm sure this rough-edged tool-man has made more than one queer boy trade in his dancing shoes for a pair of work boots and a stud finder. Ty's just that gorgeous--and he has mean streak, too (love that in a man).

Another designer, the pot-bellied Frank Bielec, tries harder than the average (closeted) bear to impress himself and his audience. When he's not telling us that he has a "lovely wife" for the umpteenth time, this swish-meister is into wrecking rooms with Christopher Lowell-like "Oh God, did he actually do that?" touches. His design sensibility is about as easy to understand as Ozzy's use of the English language.

Ladies fair better on this show...sort of.

Carpenter Amy Wynn Pastor, with her tank tops and tool belts, has our gaydar moving faster than a tub of hummus at an Indigo Girls concert. And as one loyal poster at the Trading Spaces message board suggests, former Lewis & Clark College gal (and now hotshot TS designer) Genevieve Gorder has probably "kissed more than one girl, made a suicide pact with her best friend and tried LSD at least once." Screaming meanie/Dragon Lady designer Hilda Santo-Tomas would make the perfect dyke-on-bike leather bitch. And as for sweeter-than-sugar Southern Belle designer Laurie Hickson-Smith, she's so emotional, it seems that all it would take is one mint julep to throw her right into Amy Wynn's waiting arms.

Whew! It's so gay it hurts.

Paige is annoying- seriosly- shes ALWAYS bothering poor hot Doug.

Amy Wynn is my personal hero- you never see decent looking chics using power tools on TV but FINALLY someone who I can look up to. And shes not busted and all macho, which is awesome.

I hope Laurie puts her baby on the show sometime.

The best show on TV, next to Good Eats! Paige is really annoying, and besides the first host was much better. Poot has the hots for Paige, but I just don't see it, I think the first host was so much hotter. I'd definately fuck her. Frank is a GOD! Laurie is a snotty bitch and Amy Wyn and Genevieve are definately licking each other's wooden floors...hehe get it? "wooden floors" ;)

Vern rocks. So does Frank (but I agree with that article, I'm not buying his heterosexuality). Genevieve is gorgeous (well....the later episodes, where she's slimmed down). Alex was better, and hotter, than Paige, who is still cute & bangable but really, REALLY annoying. Laurie & Hillary are just there.

Going through old tapes I had lent to people, taped over, used ect.. I saw an old episode of one of MTVs True Life stories on Masturbation and the media.. and guess who was featured on it??

the tape was taped over, dubbed on and mistreated so all you really hear her talk about is that she approves of female masturbation and indulges in it herself. Then they show her walking around in a store.
It was so funny- I couldnt believe it was her. Im gunna search around MTV archives and see if I can find a transcript or anything else.
