View Full Version : Weather Affecting Mood
HK, I've heard that there have been several studies showing a direct correlation between the weather and the way a person is feeling. Is there any validity to the theory?
I know that on a cloudy, rainy day, I just can't seem to wake up and get with it. I can drink coffee until the cows come home, and it has no effect. On a bright sunny day, however, I'm tireless.
What can be done to combat the drowsiness I feel when it's miserable outside?

Sunlight provides vitamins to the body and affects the metabolism

Gvac: I believe what you're talkinga bout is called S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) it has to do with the effect of the amount of sunlight per day affecting your mood, but before I go speculating I'll let HK give you the good answer. (He's smart like that)

GVAC - An interesting question and one that I believe is true. The main problem with determining the validity of such a question is to recognize that correlation isn't the same as causation. The statistics can therefore be interpreted differently.
Despite this issue, many studies have shown correlation (not necessarily causation!) b/w weather and all sorts of things including incidents of crime! The hotter it is, the more criminal activity occurs.
Even national or ethnic characteristics are attributed to weather. Picture the difference when you think of Latin characteristics as opposed to Russian characteristics.
A well known phenomenon called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) leaves it clear that there is at least some correlation and causation b/w weather and mood.
People with SAD are depressed during winter months when there is less daylight. The cause of SAD seems to be too little sunlight. which can actually affect some hormonal levels. Some treat SAD with UV light therapy where the body is exposed to ultraviolet light. I do not know if this technique is effective. I would think it may help some people but the majority of SAD are related to other issues than just sunlight, such as the season itself and what it represents.

I have always found I am more crabbier in the hot weather. I think the light/darkness doesn't have much to do with it as the heat
