The handshake or the Kiss on the cheek? [Archive]

Ladies, Guys, when your not good freinds but your an acquaintance of the opposite sex what do you go for? The kiss on the cheek or the handshake and say how nice it is to see them again? Or even a hug?I did the kiss on the cheek to someone I saw today and it wasnt what they expected.

I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS. I feel like such a goddamn homo/idiot/loser shaking the hand of a girl when I'm saying "hey its good to see you" or "congratulations on [something or other]".

well.. i generally hug my male friends, but if you're not good friends with someone, that could be uncomfortable. i wouldn't go for the kiss on the cheek, since that's also fairly personal (although less so in my opinion than a hug). handshakes are too formal. i think it's best to just say hi, mayeb a hand on the arm type thing when you say that it's nice to see them

Tough one, my take with women acquantances is to stand up and do a hollywood hug UNLESS I know that they are usually kind of formal (or they are older, like > 20 years) then I stand and do the double handshake. 
I think it also depends on your own personality and what other people expect of you. If you're usually kind of aloof and detached, and you go the kiss route (or vice versa), it may confuse people. Predictability = no suprises = more better

I HATE the kiss hello. It's awful and always awkward. Hugs aren't much better. Sooner or later I'll have everyone I know down to a handshake basis. Then I'll be one happy individual.

I am always totaly ocaly awkward. I usualy go for the close hello half wave and if the girl is comortable with me they come in for the kiss on the cheek or hug. There have been many times where I went for the cheek kiss as they went for the hug and I ended up with a mouthful of hair.

I've never gotten a hug from Anna and now I"m going to take it personally.

I get hugs or waves from people I expect to get kisses on the cheek from...and kisses and hugs from people I don't expect. Arrgh! I also feel embarassed for my girlfriend when she gets a kiss and hug from guys that she doesn't know well at all. This has happened a lot and its funny to watch. These guys think that its necessary to give her a kiss on the cheek and I can just read her mind...."AHHH! He's kissed me! Gross!"

Handshakes for Dudes and hot chicks that you kinda know and don't want your girlfriend to think that you are bangin.
Hugs and Kisses on the cheek for the rest of the chicks. Especially the ones that your girlfriend isn't intimidated by...but you would bang anyway.

I think hugs work very well, especially for guys. When hugging a female, you can tailor the length of it to how well you know each other. Guys are weird, so go for a handshake when in doubt.

Go for the hug. That's usually safe. It's alot worse to be suprised by a kiss than it is by a hug! I only kiss guy friends I'm very close with. But I hug almost everyone I'm friends with no matter how long I've known them. Also, let her start to hug or kiss you. When I feel comfortable to do that, I will initiate it. :)

I think the kiss on the cheek is innocent enough to do to all my female friends. It doesn't imply anything... it's just a way of saying "Hi". It's kinda funny how kissing someone two inches over (aka their lips) makes such a HUGE difference.

The only time I shake hands with a woman is if she's a superior at work or I've just completed a business transaction with her, or if I'm just meeting her for the first time.

I guess it's the Sicilian half of me, but I even hug guy friends I haven't seen in a while.

When I first meet a woman, it's a handshake. After that, it's a kiss on the cheek. Hug if it's a closer female friend.

I keep my arm free, so that if she goes for the hug, I can transition easily for the hug from the kiss on the cheek.
