Do you think professional boxing will ever regain its legitimacy and become something other than a joke?

In the old days, we didn't have the hucksterism and thugs that seem to pervade the sport (and I am using the term sport lightly) that we do now.

I don't think the sport will ever be the same personally. Now a days everything is a gimmick. A dumb gimmick, but one non the less. Our so called "champions", also tend to lack talent and skill. Look at Lennox Lewis: his succes is just built upon his size and reach.

So long as monster rapists who bite body parts off their opponent are considered the main "attraction" the "sport" will have no legitimacy.

Unfortunately, I think the public is to blame for the sorry state of boxing these days. Like Horde King stated, Tyson is the only draw in the heavyweight division.

People are far more interested in seeing an animal like Tyson rather than a skilled, gentlemanly fighter like Holyfield or Lewis.

I guess it's the whole "train wreck" phenomenon, and a pretty sad commentary on our culture as a whole.

People are always comparing the state of Boxing today to Professional Wrestling. This is a completely unfair analogy. Wrestling does not pretend to be something that it isn't, even going as far as to referring to themselves as "Sports Entertainment".

If I hear another commentator make the comparison between the two - I'm gonna scream.

I could almost feel Tyson laughing at us all as he is headed for the bank.

when has boxing ever been legit? when there was no gambling or mob influence? when there were no ex-cons for champs i.e. sonny liston? When no body died in the ring ("who killed davy moore, why what the reason for?")?

a sport where two people try to pound the other into bloody, broken mounds will never be considered legit. It's dirty by nature.
