My cat Otis ran off last night. I was stupid and forgot to latch the backdoor when I came in from sitting on the fire escape last night. He's not exactly the brightest of cats so I'm hoping he survives the "wilds" of Jersey City. Luckily, I put a collar and an ID tag on him.

Tonight, I came within 2 (TWO) feet of my cat. Then the neighbor's dog freaked him out. I tried for an hour and couldn't get him back.

That is when I BURST into tears!!!! I am SO HEARTBROKEN!! I WANT OTIS BACK! He is FAR too fragile to be out on the "streets."

Alice, hun, my heart totally goes out to you. I know this is going to sound silly when you hear my cats name but:

My FAVORITE cat, MILO (no joke) ran away when I moved into my house in 1995, the movers left the door open and he ran away, I put up posters and the whole nine, but he never came back.

Fear not fuzzy, 6 yrs later (right before we moved out to a new house) my cat came back. We got within a few feet of him and he scattered. A week later, he came back my mom called to him "milo, ksk ksk ksk (kitty call)" and he came right over! We got him, took him to the vet who confirmed his age and all of those things, it was great! Milo came back! Just to prove it was true I fed him a bbq potato chip (his favorite food as a kitten) and he dove head first into the bag, a foolproof confirmation!

If otis is back in a few days within grabbable distance, Im sure you'll have him back in the next few weeks. Fear not, and cheer up! Otis LIVES!

Perhaps there is a cat in heat in the area? I know that when my parents cat went into heat, there were kittys all over the place.

I've found with cats, the best approach is to use food, but not to approach the cat. "Agressive" movement toward them makes them run. Put some food in a dish, and just sit down near it (within arm's reach) and have some treats to offer him(Otis' favorites) if he looks up.

Don't cry anymore. I don't like to hear that your sad. It doesn't make for a happy Wilee...

At 6:30 this morning my downstairs neighbor called and said my cat was out back. He was on the fire escape b/w the 1st and 2nd floors. I scooped him up and brought him inside. No worse for the wear-- just very hungry and thirsty.

That backdoor will remained LOCKED at all times!
