This is a tough one. Props to:
Niel Pert (Rush)
Max Roach & Kenny Clarke (backed up Miles Davis and many other jazz greats)
Scott Amendola (Charlie Hunter and others [current jazz])
Charlie Watts (just for still being alive)
Kieth Moon (little guy who beat the shit out of his drums)
My favorite is Mitch Mitchell who backed up Jimmi with the sweetest licks, (damn that sounds dirty), and was part of the Dirty Mac: John Lennon (vocals, guitar), Eric Clapton (lead guitar) and Kieth Richards (base), for The Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus and did "Yer Blues." Nipple-raising. Also listen to "Crosstown Traffic" and "Fire."

TONY THOMPSON- played for Chic, The Power Station, Robert Palmer, and The Led Zepplin reunion at Live Aid. He can do it all.
TOMMY LEE- Flashy, but with the skills to back it up!
RICK ALLEN- playing straight ahead rock is alot harder than it seems. Handicap or not, the guy can play.
and finally, whoever played drums on "One Headlight" by the Wallflowers is the tastiest drummer on Earth!

Threads like this always end up deteriorating into "those guys are pussies" threads. Bottom line: there are people who play DRUMS and there are people who play SONGS. The two types of drummers are about as comparable as "Armageddon" and "Shawshank Redemption". Lars couldn't handle playing for Sting any more than Charlie Watts could play for Pantera. If you're sitting in your car listening to the radio and you're actually NOTICING those really fast triplets on the kick drum, then your are not listening to the SONG. You have been distracted and you are listening to the DRUMMING. "Kasmir" has no fills and alomost no cymbals for the first 2 or 3 minutes and it's recognized as quality drumming. Bonham played the SONG. I think it's most comparable to beautiful woman. Some woman need the big bleached hair, the boob job and the make-up (Pam Anderson) and other woman don't need any make-up or funky clothes and they still look good (Jennifer Connoly). Are both woman good looking? Yup. But they are not comparable. They're doing two different things.

that was hilarious officer, props to that one.
as for drummers, i always thought david grohl was the best. in a three piece band the drums have to make up for a lot, and his fills were always just a little different and better.

Lars couldn't handle playing for Sting any more than Charlie Watts could play for PanterA I think your a tiny bit wrong there my freind, Charlie Watts Could very well Play for PanterA. In my oppinion that is. Oh and Im not really getting the Armageddon and the Shawshank Redemption reference.
If you're sitting in your car listening to the radio and you're actually NOTICING those really fast triplets on the kick drum, then your are not listening to the SONG. I'm new to message boards, so I don't know how to paste parts of other peoples posts into my own, but I was referring to a post made by NJDMMOE who made the comment "alot of those guys are pussies". I hope I wasn't sounding too argumentative in my earlier post. But I do stand by my opinion that different drummers are not EVEN trying to do the same thing and therefore cannot be compared. The movie reference (I'll admit is obscure) but it is accurate. Those two movies are not competing for the same dollar any more than Lars and Watts are. The music world is impossible to "rank". In sports, the team with the trophy is the best. In music, it's all based on opinion. But there are a few examples of simple ability that cannot be argued. If I said "the drummer from Poison couldn't jam with James Brown" I don't think anyone would argue, but the guy from Poison is great at what he does. (flashy tricks and stick twirling). I also think that Charlie Watts (while an amazing timekeeper) simply could not gig with some heavy-ass metal band. It's not a slam on Watts. It's a fact.
Wasn't too sure if you being ultra saracastic or genuinely agreeing with me aboot the "distracting drum thing". If you were kidding around... oh well. But, as a professional musician, it was my opinion. I don't know jack shit aboot sports. Or current events. Or stocks and finances. All I do is record and play music for a living and I was all too happy to particpate in a music related thread on the RnF site. (listening to RnF is the OTHER thing I do with my time).
That's my time. ROCK ON

Thanks Bro. I've been playing Bass guitar for aboot 18 years. I just turned 30 and I'm at a really good age in my career where I can play with any band and fit right in. I was lucky enough to reocord a new tune for Hall and Oats and do one show with Carly Simon AND I've cut tracks for LFO, Mandy Moore and Otown. I know people love to bash the pop groups, but I don't think those people are seeing passed the image part of it. If Aerosmith recorded "Nothing At All" instead of Otown, Aerosmith probably would've won another Grammy. Music is music and I love pretty much all of it. I'm just now discovering Gospel music. It's great stuff. And the musicianship is top-shelf! That's what I love aboot songs. There's always some good ones being written somewhere.
Thanks. That's my time.

John Bonham redefined the importance of drum sounds on albums. Noone captured the heaviness or the agressiveness the way Bonham did. Mitch Mitchell was just an amazing drummer as much as Hendrix was a guitar player.
Also never forget Liberty Devito from the Billy Joel Band, a ridiculous drummer.
