Yep. Definately Phil Hartman. He did it all. Funny man. Straight man. He'd even play a waiter here and there. I'd say (my opinion only, knowledged one) that he's the best all around snl performer of ALL-time.

Not only my fave SNL guy but my favorite comedian of all time, the extremely insane Bill Murray.

Bill Murray was NOT a great SNL'er. He was genius in his film work, but not quite SNL. I think to say performance during the SNL tenure, you can only really cite 2 guys who were pure gold at at all times. Eddie Murphy and Billy Crystal. Honorable mention goes to Joe Piscapo(sp) and Martin Short, who had hits and misses, but were generally brillant on SNL. The only person who can approach their consistency in the last 15 years is Darrell Hammond, and possibly Dana Carvey.
Bon Jovi Fan Since Day ONE!
My favorite Weekend Update anchor was Dennis Miller.
Hartman was probably the best "all-around" performer the show ever had.

The thing aboot SNL is; every generation believes that THEIR cast is the "good old days". People who are 30 claim the Sandler, Farley, Hartman, Lovits years as the best. People closer to 40 swear by Piscopo and Murphy, people over 40 dig the BillyCrystal,Christopher Guest seasons ,and my parents still think Gilda Radner was the shit. It's all relative I guess. The show has been consistantly funny every year since the 1st season, but every year it gets slammed for not being as good as it used to be. The comedic talent that's come through that show is lightyears beyond any other comedy school in history. Any best-of SNL tape is guaranteed to be at least 1/2 full of bits that every American (&Canadian) knows almost by heart. SNL kicks ass. Period. (except for the skits with Anthony Michael Hall). PACE!!

okay. to prove that its not all relative. im 17 and im going with Eddie Murphy (james brown's celebrity hot tub party...nuff said) and phil hartman... sit there and watch either the sinatra group where hartman says hes chunks bigger than billy idol in his stool or the sketch where they sing all the duets with the likes of bono, kenny g and liza minelli. anything recent would be darrel hammond or will ferrel.
