AGHAGHAGH
My computer basically fucked its whole shit up last night. Everytime I turned it on I got a blue screen with some fatal error crap. So I used my quick restore disk which made my computer the way it was when it came from the place where baby computers are made and now I have to find all of my old CDs for all of my things like the cable modem and webcam and CD burner and OF COURSE I DONT HAVE THEM! I can't even get my puter to recognize the extra hard drive I put in, and I can't get on the net at home becuase I can't find the installation CD for my cable modem. AGHAGH NO ONE IS TOUCHING MY COMPUTER ANYMORE I FEEL LIKE I WAS VIOLATED.

Missy-
You should be able to download most drivers for your system online. If you have a CD Burner at work, or a friend who has one, it would be less frustrating to do it that way (for the devices such as printers, cameras, etc) As for the software. Yes, you'll have to find those disks to do the installation.
With your second hard drive, what OS are you running? Windows 98, Me, 2000? What size drive is it? You may need to check your BIOS settings to make sure that the computer recognizes that the drive is there.

Thanks for the help Wilee - I will probably try to get installation software for my devices at work today and burn them to a cd to bring home with me. I'm running Windows XP and have had nothing but problems with it. I need to get my 2nd drive working again, because all my pictures and music are saved on that drive and I can at least salvage that once my puter recognizes the drive is still there!

Make sure that the BIOS sees the second drive. If it doesn't, there could be a power or cabling problem. If the BIOS doesn't see it, then the OS will also not see it. If the drive shows up in the BIOS, it could be a driver issue. Try the "Add New Hardware" wizard, and see if it can find the drive on a search. If you have any questions, let me know.

missy, you can install the cable modem without the cd. You just need to know your network settings.

Missy,
All you should need to do to get your cable modem working is to configure your network card for DHCP so it will get an IP address from the modem. If you need help doing this so you can get rolling on the other stuff at home just IM me and I can probably walk you through it on the phone.

If your cable modem hooks up through USB, you will need drivers. Some USB devices will work OK when hooked up (especially in Win2K and XP) without them, but you will only have certain features. Check the modem manufacturer's site for the drivers for the modem. You SHOULD call Cablevision. They will give you the settings you need for your area (gateway, DNS settings, etc.)

True Wily. But if she can get online, even using the basic driver, she can get the manufacturer's drivers. If she is connected thru ethernet DHCP will pick up the gateway, DNS info etc.

Missy- a suggestion for the future. If you have a CD burner at home, you should invest in a good back-up program. I use Norton Ghost, because it makes an image of your hard drive. Ghost 7 is the latest and offers support for burning the image directly to a CDR (or multiple discs if it's too large for one). For the price, it's worth the peace of mind, and if you use it frequently enough (say once a week) you won't lose more than a small amount of data.

I read the whole post but missed that one line. My bad. :(
Ghost is great. I use the neterprise edition for work and it always comes in handy to have a backup image of your drive. I know Win 2k has a built in back up utility but I am not sure if there is one incorporated into XP home or Pro.
