how much advil can a person safely take?

hi hk!

i know that the dosage recommended on the bottle is basically bs. when i had mono, the doctor told me i could take lots and lots more than what the bottle says, and that it was fine so long as i didnt do it for an extended period of time. but i dont really remember how much that is... and i get the worst cramps and i'll be popping advils (maybe i should just get something stronger, i'm thinking) and sometimes i worry. so, if you could help me out, that would be great... it would be pretty pathetic to od (or demolish my stomach lining) on advil. thanks!

Good rule of thumb: When you regain consciousness in the back of an ambulance that is speeding to a hospital with its siren blaring while having your stomach pumped, you may have gone too far.

That's a li'l tip from ol' uncle Rooster.

But, the truth is, in the army, we called 800 mg Motrins "ranger candy." The truth is, I am sure that dropping 800 mg Motrin does horrible things to your liver and kidneys, so don't do that.

Follow the instructions on the bottle and drink a lot of water. Dulling the pain is not worth transplants later in life.

ARIENETTE - Some people can take more than others. Some people are predisposed towards certain seious effects that an ovedose of Advil can cause. As a general rule to avoid problems take no more than the maximum amount suggested by the manufacturer (which I believe is 400 mg).

The makers of Advil caution users against stomach and other gastrointestinal problems the product can cause so if your stomach is already hurting this probably isn't the product for you.

Finally, if you are in pain don't be afraid to ask your doctor to give you adequate pain control medication. He's ethical bound to prescribe it and you deserve to get the relief you need. Strangely enough, some stronger medicine has less ill effect than weaker medicine.

i have extremely bad migraines and before my doctor gave me a prescription he told me that it was ok to take up to 5 advils up to 4-5 times a day - that or 4 tylenol 4 times a day. now when i get my headaches though, my prescription is for 800 mg of ibuprofen 5-6 times a day. i think 2 advil is something like 400mg.

well, many years ago i had discussed it with the doctor, and her recommendation was to take advil. and it worked pretty well back then... but i am in a lot more pain these days, so i think maybe it's time to step it up. i'll go talk to someone. thanks, hk! (and you too rooster)

I ate a whole bottle of Flintstones chewables in a day once, because they're so yummy, and I didn't die or get sick.

So I figure that applies to any and all medication.
