When should a woman start getting mammograms? I'm 35. Cancer runs in my family (although not breast cancer specifically). Is it too early to start? (NOT that I want my boobs to be flattened by an ice cold vise and then pulled and poked every which way!)

My rack is a luscious work of art-- there will be NO bruising or crushing involved! (Well, maybe on a good night...)

Fuzzy:
if there is a history of cancer of
any type in your family. It's best
to be on the safe side and have
the mammogram. As
uncomfortable as it appears. it's
better to have them flattened,
then have them removed.

I'm all for Breat Cancer Awareness! Not just because I care about the women in my life, and my Grandma had a non-cancerous mass removed from one of her breasts, but I think that Breasts are GREAT!!!

I still got my pnk ribbon pin, and I'll be putting it on my Yankee's hat!

Fuzzy, I'm in the radiological field and the guidelines for mammos are annually starting at the age of 35. If you have a risk specific to breast cancer, you should start sooner.

I've heard cackles, screams, laughter, and howls coming from that room. I dread the day I start getting them.

Oh another tip, schedule your mammo 5 to 10 days after the last day of your period. It won't be so painful around that time.

PETERINA - EFFME is quite right but there are two important considerations behind the age for scans.

The first unfortunately is insurance. Many insurance companys will not pay for a mammography before 40. Some legislation was under way to require mamogrophy for special at-risk populations (such as Jewish Women in Long Island). I don't know if that was ever passed.

Virtually all doctors would like woman to get a baseline reading around 30 or even earlier. The idea with the baseline mamogram is that it almost definitely won't pick up tumors, but it will show a picture of all healthy breast tissue and can often clarify a later scan that might look suspicious. (The earlier scan can show it was a cyst for example and not a problem). Most women don't get these baselines b/c insurance companies won't cover them.

The second crucial factor is special risk groups. My mom had breast cancer and a resulting radical mascectomy. My daughters (and son) are at increased risk, compunded by the abnormally high incidence of breast cancer on long island.

For those in the "at risk" catagory, earlier scans are often recomended.

And Lisa, don't worry. I've been told that it's not nearly as painful as birth.

I have alot of questions on this too. When I was
younger, I was told I had a harmless cyst in one of
my breasts, that really doesnt affect it in health or
appearance, but it seriosly concerns me from time
to time, so should I be thinking about getting a
mammogram earlier than 30? and how much
earlier? This whole discussion is kinda freakin me
out really. Getting cancer is one of the worst fears
of my life.

That is such a RACIST pic too!

But seriously ladies, keep an eye on your health!

I'm surprised that none of the more sexist members of the board haven't asked to have ladies over for Breast exams.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU GUYS! Or is it that you just didn't check the "chick" sounding thread? Shame on you!

Or he could have put up a picture of Mamie Eisenhower and show a "Mamie-gram".

ANNA - The best bet of course is to ask your doctor. Make sure she's aware of your previously diagnosed cyst as well as other risk factors such as family history.

The cure rate for breast cancer is much better than it's been. When my mom had her radical masectomy the 5 year survival rate was only about 15%. Radical masectomy was the only treatment (and it played havoc on the lymphatic system).

Now, breast cancer is treated with lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and I think I read something about seed implants (a radioactive particles is "seeded" into the cancer).

The survival rate for breast cancer continues to grow. Early detection remains the best predictor for long term survival rates.
