let me start off by saying that i am not a big comic book person. so in my basically uninformed opinion, i'd consider like spiderman and superman and stuff like the "normal" comics. the ones you hear about most, what have you. but there are two that i absolutely love that are a little more atypical, from what i can tell...
milk and cheese. they're dairy products gone bad. basically, they're a milk container and a wedge of cheese who are complete alcoholics and violent degenerates. great stuff.

oh my goth! goth singer/songwriter voltaire also has his own little comic making fun of the new york goth scene from the point of view of an extraterrestrial visiting earth... then there are the follow up tales of this extraterrestrial and his "gang of wayward goths" in "oh my goth! humans suck" parts 1-3. very funny, especially if you know anyone who's goth or have been out to a goth club or anything

does anyone else read stuff like this? i'd be really curious to check some stuff out that's not like superheros and stuff...

If you liked Milk and Cheese, check out Dork. Same writer/artist. His wife's comic Action Girl is a cool "girl friendly" anthology series.
I haven't read oh my goth, but what Brodie said about JTHM (and the followup series Squee and I Feel Sick) are cool. So is Lenore. You may want to check out Gloom Cookie too.
I would also highly recommend Sandman. You can pick it up in trade paperbacks.

Arguably the greatest comic book series ever.
One of the best of the past 25 years, without question.

I'll back up all of the above, especially JTHM and Sandman...you might also want to check out "Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth"
It's kind of sort of a graphic novelization of the author's brief and painful relationship with his dad, but told by distorting time and memory and...well, you'd have to read it to get it...Not as off the wall as the above, but a really compellingly crafted story...plus there's pictures of guys with glass in their eye and such.

Art Spiegelman's "Maus". It's a telling of the author's parents' experiences in WW2 concentration camps, but the prisoners are portayed as mice and the germans as cats.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGHH!!! MILK AND CHEESE!!!!!!!
I thought I was the ONLY MAN ON EARTH who LOVED these two Boozed Soaked Psychos!
I first picked up a comic from them at my local GEEK store, and was instantly hooked!
Then, I found a paperback compilation of about thier first 5 comics all in one book for like 10 bucks! That thing is my new BIBLE! The real one was full of LIES, so I switched. HA!
Only problem is that after I was hooked, I found out the BAD side of Milk and Cheese. The guy who draws the NEVER makes new one!!!!
But he DID have that cartoon on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim a few times, and he write for Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and other stuff.
But MORE MILK AND CHEESE!!!!!

I've met Evan Dorkin (the mad genius behind Milk & Cheese) and he truly is that insane in person. He was doing a Milk & Cheese like once a year, but he's working on cartoons and stuff now, so he has less time to do it.

I know, it's been years since I read Milk & Cheese. As soon as I finish my current trade pb I'm reading (GI Joe Vol 2), I gotta break out the M&C Trade.
