I was at work last night, trying to listen to the fight.
But for the past few days, the FM Band has opened up in the area, which means transmitters are transmitting signals OTHER than the one they are supposed to.
This means you can pick up various stations from across the country and canada.
Well, just as the fight was starting last night, I start to hear "We Thuggin'" by Fat Joe and R. Kelly.
First, I thought Earl was messing on the board - or maybe it was Rory's theme.
But no... the open FM Band decided to plunk a LINCOLN NEBRASKA TOP 40 STATION on my radio just as the fight was starting.
So I heard *NOTHING*.
I HATE NEBRASKA.

I have been geting reception problems the past few days which is unusual, and for some reason the only time I get good reception is when the antenna is facing the floor

NEBRASKA: One of the greatest, bleakest, most depressing albums ever!! a true masterpiece. And it has my favorite Bruce song "Johnny 99" on it.

Nebraska sucks? Well duuuu.
But I had a similar problem last Friday. I was out in PA, on my way home about 10PM, and I put on WNEW. Now I know that being that far from NYC, my signal goes in and out around all the mountians and valleys, but I'm hoping for the best, and I know that there are areas of good and bad reception.
So I hear the pre-fight stuff, and I'm happy as hell. But then, I start getting some SHITTY PA 102.7 station playing garbage! So now, I'm on PA backroads speeding like a bastard to get out of the valley I just drove into to hear the next segment! Luckily, I just got close enough to my own area to hear the actual fight, and even the Billy Staples parody skit.
SOMETHING finally went right!
Did it just take that long for the fight to happen, or did I just hear some sort of replay for people who missed it earlier in the night?
Somebody clue a poor white boy in, Yo.
EVIL REIGNS!!!
Sig Pic is FUCKING BUSTED!!

Band openings can suck, and they can be cool too. The usual cause of band openings is changes in weather patterns. When you get a batch of cold air on top of warm air, it creates a condition where FM signals can experience "Tropospheric Ducting", it loses little strength, and can travel long distances (e.g. from Nebraska to NY). You will usually get this situation at times when the weather is changing (hot to cold and vice versa).
To combat band openings, you should use a DIRECTIONAL antenna. A good one to use is a Yagi, similar in appearance to the old TV antennas you see on people's roofs (before cable and satellite). You can direct it toward the station you wish to pick up, and it will attenuate signals from other areas. Check your local Radio Shack, or online for one.
I knew that Ham Radio license is good for something.
