The people of Howard Beach and woodhaven??

They Mourn John Gotti as if he was a hero, crying and weeping calling him a great man and wonderful person.

Gotti is responsible for hundreds of deaths and maybe thousands if you include the drugs his "family" distributed throughout the area. He murdered in cold blood a neibor who accidently ran over his son who ran into the street.

What causes people ( mostly italians) to laud a moster instead of vilifying him ???

I want it on record that I thought he was a wonderful person,a great human being, and he actually cared about his fellow man.

Mortician, you're absolutely right. It's strange, but every once in a while a villain comes along who captures the imagination of the public, and he is lauded as a celebrity.

If any of you are ever unfortunate enough to have your houses broken into or are mugged at knife point or gun point by a druggie in need of a fix, you can thank Gotti and people of his ilk for that.

If you ever have a good friend or relative get hooked on drugs, see if you think Mr. Gotti and the Mafia are such wonderful people after that, too. And don't even get me started on their little "protection money" racket where they rob small business owners blind by threatening to shut them down if they don't get paid off.

A thug is a thug is a thug...no matter how glamorous movies or television try to portray it.

GVAC - Nicely said. Unfortunately, John Gotti is just the tip of the iceberg. Our society values baseball players and not teachers, pays garbagemen more than social workers and in general has its priorities completely screwed up.

It's this type of thinking that lets dangerous wack jobs like Lieberman get nominated for the vice presidential slot.

Blame society for individual actions, remove personal responsibility for individual acts.

As long as we keep celebrating Gotti and Strawberry and Tyson and the like, we don't have a chance.
