Another reason I hate advertising people. Does anyone have a picture or link to a picture of this? I JUST GOTTA SEE THIS THING NOW.

"I have a link to the picture of the poster you want to see!"
This is the answer I WOULD have left if I indeed DID have the link! But I don't.
But I assure you that when someone who does have the info posts it, I too will view it.

Actually, I can see it. Note that the blades of grass are all sqare edged..looking like smaller buildings. Add to the fact that the ad was placed right across the street from the WTC. AND while it was happening, Starbucks was the ONLY place charging us for ANYTHING, and they said that order came from corporate headquarters. Personally, I think they knew what they were doing. Awful.

I didn't think I would, but I see it too. Everything together, the squared blades of grass, the symmetry of the cups... It looks like a very basic advertizing tool was used - to bring a common image to mind to get a second look at the ad. I'm sure it was intentional. And it would'nt be the first time. Ad agencies did the same thing with the Challenger explosion.

I think you'd really have to stretch the imagination to relate that to 9/11. People need to relax. It's two plastic cups of tea, ok?

I think they didnt use the slogan "Collapse Into Cool", which has nothing to do with iced tea or anything, that no one would really have said it was mocking the 9/11 event. That slogan makes it pretty obvious what they were trying to do.

I see it, but only because people pointed it out. If there hadn't been this big buzz, I wouldn't have noticed it.
Precisely.
That's a beautiful example of bad subliminal advertising. And yes, it is completely a reference to 9/11. It's in incredibly bad taste, but nonetheless, it is intentional. They're just embarassed they got snagged on it and now have to pretend they didn't mean to. Actually, Starbucks themselves wouldn't have come up with it, but whatever ad agency they hired did. And the corporate moron big-wigs either were fooled by it themselves, or are so awful, they went along with it. Ad-men will prey on ANY vulnerability you have. They don't care. If it sells, it sells, that's it. They just got busted on this one.
But seriously, the symbolism is all over that ad, as pointed out in the article. The dragonfly is completely representitive of a plane, the grass is totally the lower buildings, the cups are placed at an angle very reminiscent of the viewpoint of an onlooker watching the towers, even the straws sort of represent the antenna on one of the towers, and to use the word "collapse" is just a dead giveaway.
Man that was stupid.

Look, I SAW 9/11 go down up close and personal.
I hope Starfucks loses business. I mean, didn't ANYONE THINK before they made that ad?
To all of you who think we're "too sensitive" and "too thin-skinned": 9/11 only happened a little over NINE months ago. How SOON we FORGET! What would your reaction have been if Starfucks came out with this ad campaign two months after the event???
People-- DO NOT fall back into comfort and apathy!!!

Is it too late if I'm already comfortably apathetic?
Dennis Miller actually had a sentiment I agreed with...I was already afraid of psychotic, murderous, religious zealot foreigners on September 10th, and suddenly things are supposed to be "different?" Seems all too familiar already...

I think that ad agencies have people who get paychecks to make sure that ads aren't offensive, even in the slightest way. So they probably knew about the resemblance even if at first it was an accident, but ignored it.

Oh come on now! I think that the Twin Towers are the LAST thing I'm would equate with that ad! If it wasn't for all the negative press, I'd just see 2 teas, and a bug we all see in summer!
And as far as the Collapse into Cool, well, it's a dumb slogan. But hey, there's been A LOT of bad slogans!
I think this was blown out of proportion.
And now I gott try these teas!

"ROAR!!! I'm an arrogant armchair sociologist, and EVERYTHING offends me!!!"
Insert every other dickweed on the planet into above description and you'd be pretty accurate in representing this latest clusterfuck of moronic personalities. Subtract them from the equation, you have a lot of hooplah over some shitty "tea" and Starbucks has about 300 times less advertising than the promo would have gotten them if people stopped being bitches. Way to feed the beast, crybabies.

The similarity between the "Collapse Campaign" and 9/11 is without a doubt intentional.
My wife works for an marketing company that is launching bottled Starbucks Frappucino and PepsiBLUE to Canada. Trust me, every single detail of these campigns is discussed and discussed again. Hundreds of people throw in their two cents before these ads are launched. It is impossible that not ONE of those people who launched "Collapse in to Cool" didn't make the connection. Even if the guy who actually designed it didn't intend it to be a 9/11 reference (and I think he did) it's impossible that every single person it was approved by missed the similarities.
BOTTOM LINE- we DO all now know about the new Starbucks Tea, so I guess "they" win. When Starbucks prints an apology it'll make news all over again. From the advertisers viewpoint..... Mission Accomplished.
It's the sad state of the world we live in. That all important bottom line governs everything.

when they were talking about it i imagined two long, slender glasses, taken at such an angle so it looks like they would be HUGE and a dragonfly with a turban on his head heading for it. i didnt expect some ad that kindergardners in art-class could do better... they should take it off just because it doesnt make anyone want to drink tea, if anything, it makes me want to rape people.
