Hey Horde King. I have a serious problem for once.

I have nightmares sometimes that are so realistic and frightningly Sick and Twisted, that I wake up very frightened and upset.

Now this is pretty normal every now and the, I guess. The only problem is that they're so realistic that they stick in my memory, and just the memory of them can disturb me again. As I type this, one in perticular comes to mind.

And another problem is that myh nightmares are the ONLY dreams I really remember for any length of time. Any helpful thoughts?

Any wise ass board members want to make fun of me? I hope so! That's always funny!

NJDMMOE - Hey, if you have a serious problem only "for once" you're WAY ahead of the game.

Many people have nightmares. They are not unusual. Most however settle down and go back to sleep once again in a few minutes.

When we sleep the two halfs of our minds (the conscioius and unconscioius) communicate. Thoughts burried in the unconcsious mind are allowed to briefly surface.

Some of these thougts can be very disturbing such as violent sexual imagry, terrible things happening to people you love etc. This does not mean that you necessarily want to do any of the things that trouble you in your nightmares, just that they reside in some portion of your mind.

Say you saw the news and they played a clip of someone getting shot and it's graphic. The image while you see it is disturbing so you try to block it out of your mind and prevent yourself from thinking about it. While you sleep your control is relaxed and you begin to think of it once again.

It's not surprising that you remember the scarier nightmares. They are disturbing and troubling to you. That's why you repressed the thoughts in the first place.

You didn't indicate whether the nightmares all deal with the same imagry or scenerio or if they are varied. You wrote that you were thinking of one in particular as you typed this.

If you don't want to get explicit on the board, just e-mail me.

Oh, I have no problem telling you a couple of dreams here.

One of my dreams has the same setting, but they're all a little different. The houses look different, but I'm in an old, dark house sometimes with other people, and it's all furnished and lived in. Not like an abandoned house, or ghost house or anything. It's just that while I'm in this house, there is this overwhelming prescence of total evil there. That's about all I can describe. I feel like I'm being watched through every window, doorway, crack and crevas in the walls or floors. It's always dark in these places, like the power is out, or prehaps the darkness surrounding this prescence just blocks out all light.

But the one that I can still recall and get freaked by happens in the Jungle. I'm in a large Van, kind of like the one you see deliver Drakes cakes, or bakery good. Like a big UPS truck. Suddenly, we arrive at a small village on the dirt road. It's in Vietnam, and they're all those grass reed huts up on stilts. As I enter the first one, I see an American service man, I guess and Army guy or Marine, strapped to a table on wheels, like in the hospital. Suddenly, a little Vietnamese guy starts dissecting this Army guy's stomach right there in front of me, while the guy is fully awake, and screaming in pain. I tried to run in my dream, but I was stuck in that spot, unable to move as they start to remove his entrails. When I can finally move, the captors of this Army guy start wheeling the table after me out into the village.

Oh man, I think I'm sweating just typing it.

So there you go. Maybe I'll have another one tonight, and I'll type it.

Oh I just did have one more last night actually. A fat man stole a large Deli Genoa Salami from my house, and ran up the street. So I followed him, and confronted him about where he got the Salami. He had a van full of Deli meat, and tried to show me receipts that showed is was his Salami, and he had bought it. But I noticed that the bag the Salami was in had my Mother's hand writing on it, and other markings on it that PROVED it was ours! So I took out one of those retractable Metal police batons, and beat him in the heaad repeatedly until he fell over bleeding. Then I woke up.

That one didn't disturb me that much.

JEN - You noted that your nightmares come when something has been bothering you for awhile. Once the problem has been resolved the nightmares should stop.

NJDMMOE - I think that the most impotant part of your first set of dreams (with the old houses), is the feeling of being under close observation and scrutiny from everywhere by some vague evil. Replace "evil" with "parents" and the concept of invasive scrutiny with their desire to keep you within their expectations and your own individuation into the person you are, and I think we have a match. If not a parental figure, look for another authority figure in your life, who you feel is making demands on you.

The second dream, in the van in Vietnam, you see an immobilized Army guy. A Vietnamese guy disects the Army guy in front of you and you see and hear his pain. This dream seems to me to be a close variation of the first. You're witnessing an individual (a projection of yourself perhaps) who cannot escape, much as you may feel you cannot escape from a particular situation as described in the first dream. You identify with his pain so much that you sweat thinking about it b/c he is you.

Your third dream, involving attacking and concquering someone who had your possessions appears to be a wish fulfilment means of achieving the end results that you seek that is causing the conflict present in all these dreams.

The first two dreams portray your situation, the third dream how you'd like to lash out against it.

All 3 dreams are very different but have a central unifying theme running through them.

Wow. That's pretty good man. I appreciate you taking the time to read my stupid dreams man.

I still live at home, and REALLY want to get out on my own finally, but everytime I try to, it seems the my financial situation keeps me down. And my parents do have a few stipulations that I must abide by while living in their house. They're not monsters, but I guess that could explain my nightmares. I still love my parents, but sure, I'd change a few things they do. Like them not letting me have alchohol in the house! I can't even have a cold beer! But it's not so bad, I guess.

So does this mean that I'll continue to have these types of dreams until I move out, or get these issues worked out with them? I mean, could it be as easy as getting them to let me drink beer in my own house?

i've always wanted to study dream interpretation. i was a psych major in college, and they offered it. However, i wanted to wait until my senior year to take it, because i new i'd enjoy it and wanted to have a good senior year. sure enough, this class was offered every semester i attended oneonta with the exception of my senior year.

NJDMMOE - They are not stupid dreams. They are reflections of things going on in you that matter to you greatly. As such they are of the utmost importance.

It's very hard to reconcile the conflicting emotions that you feel. On the one hand you love your parents, on the other hand you'd love to be on your own. You see their rules as not unreasonable, but resent that they are imposing them on you.

These are normal conflicts but are very troubling. It's easier to confront these issues symbollically in dreams. Ideally, the dream confrontations will give you the ability to better deal with these real issues in your real (waking life).

The dreams will abate when you have resolved these conflicts. That doesn't necessarily entail drinking at home or moving out. Perhaps a talk with your parents might allow you to renegotiate some of the rules.

JEN - It's never to late to go back to school. I did after 12 years practicing law. (It's nice to do something socially useful for a change!)

Great Horde King I was wondering if you can tell me what this one dream I had was about when I was from 3 years old to 10 years old. Or it's just one of those weird dreams. I've stopped having this dream but I used to have it for years.
(I am not making this up on my great grampa's grave)
Okay it's like I'm ernie from sesame street and me and bert are sleeping in the garage then the head of the light blue muppet (not grover) appears and it's evil and it's floating around and headbutts me in the head until I wake up.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!? could you please put my riddles to rest.

MCGUYVER - Sounds to me like you were a Sesame Street fan. The dreams stoped after you no longer were interested in the show.

MOSHIN - Although I'm not familiar with the show you're refering to, the dream itself seems pretty clear.

You told him that he hurt you and that he missed his chance. Seems like you're dreaming about something you wanted to do in real life (or actually did - and are revisiting the experience)

Ohhhh! Horde King TOTALLY DISSED FOX TV!! HAHAH!!

Who does watch that crap??

Hey horde. I waas talking to my Mom this morning, and said that she's been having a nightmare for years about never being able to find a bathroom.

Is there any studies that say that people who have nightmares can pass some gene on? Are some people pre-ordained at birth to have more nightmares than others?

Some studies have shown a genetic component to nightmares and night terror, but I don't know if any empirical research has been done.

Genetics are complex and it's always easy to say that there is a genetic component. It's probably very safe to say that there is some genetic link to all behavior (or at least the predisposition to act in certain ways.)

On the other hand, it's clear that nightmares and the like are environmental as well.

this might seem like a bit of a weird new agey cure but it worked for me:

I used to have nightmares when i was younger, but when i was a teenager i got into meditation, and i started confronting the nightmares while meditating, as in recalling what i could remember of them, then altering them to an outcome that i would rather have. since then i have been nightmare free

And Dark Hippie, could you please expand on this theory right after you're done hugging that tree.
