Cardinals righthander Darryl Kile was found dead Saturday morning in his room at Chicago's Weston hotel, hours before a game against the Cubs.
The cause of death for Kile, 33, is unknown at this time.
Kile is survived by his wife and two sons.
The game, scheduled for a noon start, was delayed when the teams learned of the tragedy and later cancelled altogether.
Commissioner Bud Selig was at the game but was unavailable for immediate comment. Selig is in attendance for the pregame tribute to legendary Cards broadcaster Jack Buck, who died Wednesday after battling Parkinson's disease for years.
Cubs catcher Joe Girardi told the crowd "We regret to inform you that because of a tragedy in the Cardinals family, that the commissioner has cancelled the game today. please be respectful, you'll find eventually what has happened ... and I ask that you say a prayer for the St. Louis Cardinals family."
