Dozens Injured In LIRR Train Collision
Westbound Trains Were Traveling At Slow Speed
Dozens of people suffered minor injuries Saturday when two westbound Long Island Railroad trains collided as they entered the Jamaica station in Queens at a slow rate of speed, a railroad spokesman said.
Thirty people, including two crew members, were taken to hospitals, but none of the injuries were believed to be serious, said LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto. Another 37 people were treated at the scene.
Some of the injured were taken to hospitals in Queens immediately after the crash, which happened shortly before noon.
Others transferred to alternate trains at Jamaica and rode into Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, where they then reported their injuries.
One train was traveling to New York from Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and the second originated in Hempstead, N.Y. The Jamaica station is a major transfer hub for the railroad.
The cause of the collision was under investigation.
