If you buy from a seller that has a good rating ( each seller is rated ) you should not get ripped off. After the sale you get to rate the seller, and its not in his best interest to rob you if your negative feedback will ruin his reputation.

That said, i have found that many things that you can get on ebay, you can get new from a retalier on line, just put in the item in www.mysimon.com or www.pricescan.com to find a low internet price.

Ebay is best for strange or hard to get collectibles.

good luck.

i've bought way too many things off ebay and i, personally, have never had a problem. definitely check out their ratings, that helps. but i've bought things i really wanted from people with low ratings (could just mean that they havent had many transactions, not that they're bad), and those were fine too.

but, as sexy bastard pointed out, it is VERY addictive. beware

I got two things from e-bay, a VCR and a video card. The VCR is fantastic and it was a steal. The video card was gray market, (no US warranty). The seller disappeared and Diamond (the manufacturer) wouldn't replace the card. Oh yeah, the serial number didn't match any Diamond product.

However, when you pay with a credit card you are ALWAYS protected. If there's a problem that you can't resolve immediately dispute the charge, write a letter saying you didn't get what you ordered and you were not able to return the product b/c the seller disappeard. I wasn't charged for the card. My son had fun taking it apart.

SUNNY - If you know what product you're interested in, you can usually ferret out an excellent price by using a shopping bot.

You have the advantage of getting a new product from a more reliable source.

I just bought a digital camera for $400 from a store I found using a bot. The next cheapest price was $500.
