THR: After 9/11, pundits said irony was dead and Americans would start caring about world events. Turns out they were wrong. Why?

Maher: Because it's gonna take a lot more than knocking down the World Trade Center and bombing the Pentagon for Americans to change. And there's a truism that people get mad at me for saying, too, but it's absolutely true. I mean, my God, we're back to worrying about sharks and Gary Condit, for crissakes.

Couldn't agree more. The complacency of this country is what's going to get us all killled...

its the way of america tho, unfortunately. we have the attention span of a small child, and there's little that's gonna be done to change it.

Americans barely care about domestic issues. Why the hell would they care about foreign issues?

As much as I don't like Mahr, he is correct in this instance, and has made some valid points in the past.

i agree completely. at the beginning, people were all hyped up. they didnt know how to deal with that kind of shock and pain.. they wanted revenge. and then, like everything else, that anger and the interest faded. it was more important to worry about britney and justin's breakup than the fate of the country. maybe it was just too much for people to get their heads around...

it's incredibly sad that people have such short memories. like jeff said, it's going to get us all killed. i, for one, still have nightmares and flashes and am absolutely terrified of what's going to happen to us if we dont do something soon. i remember how, in the weeks following 9/11, everyone was saying "never forget"... i thought it seemed like the most obvious thing in the world. how could anybody EVER forget something like this? and yet, here we are, not even a year has passed, and no one seems to remember...

Well, how do you think we all should be acting?it would be nice if people seemed to care what the hell was going on, and about protecting their country. getting over the initial shock and fear of something like this should not mean virtually ignoring that it happened. i know people who never even think about it, who figure that they're safe and it's not really their problem. people need to be aware, take an interest. not everyone's going to run the government or be in the military, but i see so much apathy it makes me ill. of course everyone's going to react to things differently, but if thousands of innocent dead isn't enough of a wake up call, i dont know what is

People just want to live their lives, go back to a sense of normalcy, and forget. It's an unfortunate attitude, but it's the way of the world and isn't solely an American trait. There's always going to be some issue for Americans to rally around for fifteen minutes, be it international or domestic. Lasting change seems to be thing of the past.

I think that people are interested in condit again because HE KILLED SOMEONE.

Other than that, I do agree that Americans went back to normal pretty quickly. I think that it's a good mechanism for coping. No one tears down our stride no matter what.

As for the terrotists, I still want those bastards dead and strung up. There is no changing that.

And don't even question the love I have for my country. I love America and I pledge my allegiance to this land.

I NEVER thought I'd say this, but I agree with Maher.

Americans have a tendency to not care about things that don't affect them directly. For example, non-smokers could care less that an obscenely enormous tax was placed on cigarettes today in NY. They figure "I don't smoke, so who cares?"

All too often, we fail to see the big picture. It's a testament to just how amazing this country is that it can continue to thrive with so many ignorant people running around.

Right and I see that this board is just flooded with political talk about 9/11,the war on terrorism, and the future of the free world.People need their distractions.....just because they dont talk about something dosent mean its not on their minds....... If everyone here thinks Americans are so complacent why dont they lead by example and quit this mindless, meaningless distraction of a message board and join one of the armed forces?
And i dont swim in the ocean because of a fear of sharks.....and Gary Condit really did murder someone. <P>

I see that this board is just flooded with political talk about 9/11,the war on terrorism, and the future of the free world.People need their distractions.....just because they dont talk about something dosent mean its not on their minds.......no one said that. i'm not putting anything on anyone that isnt there, and i'm not saying that just because people have things that distract them from constantly obsessing over terrorists and their own security they dont still think about these things. but i do know, in my personal life, that there are people who dont think about it. AT ALL. some people who weren't as affected as others really dont care. my sister, for example, is one. on 9/11, she was supposed to be going to a concert in the city which was obviously canceled. that day, she said that if they held the concert, she'd want to go into the city and go to it. and it doesn't make her a bad person, in my opinion (she happens to have a wonderul heart)... but it just showed me how much some people can really separate themselves and not care as much as you might expect. it's like gvac said about the cigarette tax, if it doesnt affect me directly, why worry? distractions are fine... distraction to the point of oblivion is notIf everyone here thinks Americans are so complacent why dont they lead by example and quit this mindless, meaningless distraction of a message board and join one of the armed forces?because that is not the only way to help. that's a really narrow minded view of this whole situation, seagullbeagle, and i know you better than to believe that you actually think that being in the military is the only way anyone can do anything. people should help in the ways that are right for them, and just take an interest and be aware. complacency can be very dangerous, especially these days

I disagree with everyone who is agees here with Bill Mahr or agrees with his sentiment.

In fact I am insulted by anyone who has.

I think all of you are acting a bit self-fucking righteous here.

Yes Americans are trying to move on from this tragic event, and I personally see nothing wrong with that.

In fact, I am proud to see Amercans get back to there ways.

How dare any of you say that because Americans are attempting to move forward that they are still not saddend or still living in fear from this event??

Well fuck you.

I still get up to work

I still live my life

I still post here

I still watch the Simpsons every night and laugh my ass off...

does that mean that I am any less of an American???

does that mean that I have trivialized the attacks of 9/11???

no.

it means nothing

and I am not going to live day to day worrying about Antrx or suicide bombers.

according to Bill "we're back to worrying about sharks and Gary Condit, for crissakes. " --- well fuck you if I am. who the fuck cares if I am??? should everything deemed trivial by Bill Mahr be extracted from our lives??? would that make me a better American???

fuck no, it won't

in the end, every individual has to deal with it in there
own way.

and it is not FOR ANY OF YOU to judge how people deal with it.

So if I try and get back to normal, and still find time to do other things besides worry about the world trade center, i don't think it is that bad.

Fuck any of you who sit there in front of your computers and cast judgment on the rest of America for not mourning the way you feel is right, or responding in a way you feel is right.

I grow even prouder of this nation each day, cause we have seen the face of terror and as a people united and we withstood it... and are moving on to getting our lives back to where they were --> living openly and freely

this thread makes me fucking sick.

to see a bunch of people who waste the day posting on a fucking website (just like I do) tell me that Americans have become complacent is just fucking stupid.

- this thread should be fucking locked -

and I don't see why anyone should be chastized for attempting to get back to our normal lives.

Normal? We're dropping bombs and killing civilians. I don't know if the government is wise or crazy in downplaying the situation we are in. I would say our complacency is related to economics...people tend to buy more when they feel safe. But make no mistake, this is wartime. Nothing "normal" about terrorist threats and Marines dying.

I think all of you are acting a bit self-fucking righteous here.no arguments there. i think with anything this emotionally rooted, people tend to get that way... myself included. but nobody here should think for a second that they're any different. no matter what side of the issue you're on, everyone gets really self righteous in standing up for their opinion. EVERYONE.How dare any of you say that because Americans are attempting to move forward that they are still not saddend or still living in fear from this event??i dont think anyone said that. there is a world of difference between moving forward and forgetting. moving forward is completely healthy and normal and is what we should all be doing or trying to do. but there are people who really aren't still saddened or living in fear (although, to some degree, that's a good thing) and i have met more than a few of these. if you havent, then i think that's great since it might indicate that there are less people like that than i think there might be. unfortunately, i dont really believe that.to see a bunch of people who waste the day posting on a fucking website (just like I do) tell me that Americans have become complacent is just fucking stupid.sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me... you say that going back to normal life doesnt imply having forgotten, yet you use the fact that we've all gotten back to our normal lives as proof that we've become complacent. maybe i've misunderstood the intention here, but that's what i get...I don't see why anyone should be chastized for attempting to get back to our normal lives.again, they shouldnt. normal life is good. oblivious life isnt
