You know, why do people get all up in arms about this damn Pledge of
Allegiance ruling in the Supreme Court, yet the same court's ruling on the school voucher thing, which will have serious repercussions in this country, nobody is upset about? Same thing with recycling - I can't believe Bloomberg could just end a program like that, yet nobody seems to have made a fuss!

I agree that people should care about those things, people don't realize how many laws and policies effect them and they need to. But the Pledge of Allegiance is a fundamental part of this country and to me, banning it is a violation of our 1st ammendment. I don't think we should make anyone do it, but we should ALWAYS have a choice. Don't tell me what I can say and not say. I think that is why people are making such a big deal over that and not the other things.

Our priorities are really messed up in this country. Teens can get free condoms in high schools, but if a teacher reads Psalm 23 out of the Bible in class in a public school, she would be fired.

Bloomberg came from money and is all about money - that has always been his priority.

Teens can get free condoms in high schools,

Damn I wish I were a high schooler still-- why pay for sex when you can get it for free. Wait, what are we talking about again?

Well, I think what the court said was that kids couldn't be forced to say the pledge since it contained the words "under God". Nobody is stopping anyone from saying it if they want, but you can't be forced to make a religious statement.

And even if the Pledge were removed from schools, it would be no big deal to just reinstitute the pledge without the "under God" part. It was only added back in the Fifties anyway, and was not an original part of the wording.

Meanwhile, public money can now be given to religious organizations. Doesn't that seem like a clear violation of the seperation of church and state? Never mind that vouchers will only cripple our public school systems without making the education system any better.

I applaud the School Voucher program, and nothing could be MORE constitutional. "Public" money, just so you know, is code for "Money we rob from the taxpayers." Ditto for "Government funds."

School vouchers merely stop the government from having a monopoly on the educational system. If a taxpaying family decides to send their children to a private school, shouldn't they be entitled to a refund of the taxes they pay for the failing public school system?

I think this whole idea of a refund on tax money is bogus. For example, when we had a surplus, there was all this talk about how the government had overcharged us and how we should get back the extra money. By that logic, when the government has a deficit, have we been undercharged? Shouldn't we then be paying more?

Putting aside the debate as to constitutionality (since apparently there is no debate acccording the the SC), I don't think having school vouchers will benefit anyone. Public schools will most likely lose students and funding, and will only get worse and worse. Meanwhile, most kids will not be able to go to a private school through the voucher system - those schools are selective, and will no doubt take very few children from inner cities and other places where schools are bad. Moreover, most are small and there's no way there's enough room in private schools for a deluge of voucher kids. And what says that a kid who is failing in public school won't also fail in private school and either get kicked out or help drag the new school down? And if they are forced to leave, won't they just end up back in the gutted public school program?

The voucher idea is simply a way to avoid the problem and not fix it. People who's kids are grown or have never even had kids pay taxes that go to the schools. Even if we are a country centered around the individual, there are still sacrifices we need to make for the common good.

The government undercharges? By the looks of my 2001 tax return I respectfully disagree.

However, for those who feel they haven't paid their fair share of taxes, you may want to write your U.S./state representative and senator and ask them to propose a similar program (on the federal or state level) like the one that was started in Arkansas by Gov. Mike Huckabee:

No, government spending should be cut. If we weren't taxed so damned much, we would be able to afford the things we need, and not depend on the government to give it to us in the form of a "program."

About guitar you mean? :)

Look, I don't love paying taxes, but I think that there's things that only the government can provide to us, services that are necessary but could never be done profitably by a private company. I don't think privatization works, for many reasons. But in any case, I don't think that having a public school system is a very extreme government program to have.
