If I lived in NYC, I probably wouldn't do it as much b/c there is one on almost every corner, but I always give homeless/panhandlers a dollar when I see them. It's not much and I know there are alot more ways to make a difference, but this is one small way for me.

Some people I know say they won't give money b/c they will just buy liquor or drugs with it. I say give it to them anyway. You don't know for sure what they will use it for and they obviously need the dollar more than I do. Besides, if I was homeless, I would probably drink too.

Anyway, just thought about it b/c I saw one on the way to work this morning. My little sister LuLu always had my mom give the homeless money when we went to the city and still does, she has such a big heart :) I actually do it now because I saw how generous she is.

I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death! -Patrick Henry <IMG SRC="http://rfnetearth2ron.50megs.com/images/rfnetaggie11.jpg">

I do a lot of charity work, including work with veterans, children's charities, food banks and shelters. The guy who is panhandling on the street has options to visit shelters and places to get a meal and a place to sleep.

I realize that a lot of these places are overcrowded, but they are available. I prefer to make my time and financial contributions there, because I've seen first-hand where and how the money is spent.

Some of the people on the street will spend the $$ on booze or may not even need it. I heard there was some guy over by 57th street panhandling while holding a cell phone. What an obvious shyster....

I think it is great to give to the homeless what you can.

I don't think people really understand the homeless and why they are in that position. I remember really getting mad at someone who was making fun of this homeless guy living under a bridge in town and calling him "lazy". Most of the homeless have psychiatric problems and are drug and alcohol abusers. I believe a lot of them are truly incapable of working. I really don't think that anyone "ENJOYS" sleeping under a bridge in the freezing cold.

I don't know what the problem is that shelters can't be made safer for these people or proper housing provided for them. We end up paying in the end anyway for them.
