I've heard that we are, either consciously or subconsciously, attracted to people with similar characteristics to our parents. Have their been any studies about this? My ex had some similar traits as my dad and I know some females who had really screwd up dads and they end up dating jerks. I was just wondering if there was any proof to this or just a theory?

AGGIE - It's a good question.
Everything we do is motivated by conscious or unconscious desires. Sometimes figuring out what they are is very difficult.
There have been empirical studies showing that children adopt the same traits of their parents in raising their own children. An unfortunately well known example, is that children who were abused are more likely to abuse their own chlildren.
Many theories (including some evolutionary theories) subscribe to the
"similar characteristics" idea. However, I have never read any empirical studies specifically addressing this issue.
When I get a chance I'll check the database and see if I can find empirical support for the hypothesis.
