What exactly constitutes a mid-life crisis? I always hear about the men who go out and have affairs or buy a corvette or something like that. But I think my dad may be going through one, not a bad one though.

He's always been athletic and is in great shape, but I think he is really trying to hold on to his youth. Last year he learned to snow board (he also spiked his hair, grew a goatee and bought oakley's). Last month he turned 50 and he is currently in Costa Rica learning to surf. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that he's still in this shape and everything but the thought of a midlife crisis popped in my mind...Or maybe I'm just suprised.

That doesn't sound too bad, my buddies dad bought a new Audi TT and built an entire huge extension on their already nice sized home. <P>

There is debate as to whether a "mid-life crisis" truly exists. It is certainly true that some people do exhibit behavior of the kind you describe, but it is equally true that there are many who do not.

Among those who believe it exists, the thought is that it is either an attempt to recapture the "glories" (and reduced responsibilites) of youth or an attempt to deny that they are aging and must eventually face the thought of their own mortality.

It is my belief that the "Mid-life crisis" basically affects those who married very young. They feel that they have missed out on a lot of the things that some of their contemporaries have enjoyed and feel the need for a "crash course" in youthful behavior. However, I find it sad because these folks have experienced a lot of things that many people strive for, buying a nice home, settling down, having a raising children, etc.

I like to joke with my wife that instead of buying a sportscar for my mid-life crisis...I married her.
