Hey King, My Dawg.

Now that I've been unemployed for almost 2 months, I don't NEED to be asleep for work anymore. Musual routine has been broken, and I find that I usually fall asleep at 3 or 4 AM, and wake up at like 10 or 11. And I HATE it because I feel that half my day is gone at 11. I know it's not if I don't fall asleep until 4, but I don't want to be up all night, and sleep all day. Now I'm just staying up all night tonight in hopes it will make me tired later tonight when I want to sleep.
Do you have any suggestions to help me return to my desired sleep schedule?
Plus, can my insomnia be a problem? It seems to return on occasion. I can try to chalk it up to unemployment now, but it has happened even when I needed to be asleep. And I was a total insomniac for almost like 4 months once when I was in 7th grade.

I'll be up waiting for your answer. Well, not really, I just thought that would add suspense, or danger, or some other gay emotion.

NJDMMOE - It's very easy to fall out of a sleep routine and hard to get back into one.

Many sleep advocates feel that the best way to get back into a sleeping routine is to only allot yourself a certain time for sleep. If you feel that you want to sleep b/w 12 and 8, make certain that you ONLY allow yourself to sleep during those times. No naps at any other time.

Even if you don't sleep for a night or two, you'll eventually sleep from sheer exhaustion.

Something you might want to consider as a possibilitiy is that unemployment is correlated with depression and depression can cause insomnia

Thanks. I'm trying that, and I feel kinda tired right now, so that's a good sign. I'm not allowing myself to slep past 10. And I really don't nap, so that's not an option.

And what do you mean. Do I get depressed because I'm unemployed, or do I have a better chance of becoming unemployed because I'm depressed.

I'm not breaking your balls. I'm just curious.

If you are still on your former company's insurance plan (though a Cobra extension or something like it), I would suggest seeing a physician and getting something to help you sleep. A lack of sleep affects all aspects of your life and compounds your aggravation over many things (including finding employment). I was out of work for about 3 months and was experiencing the same as you (so you're not alone). A glass of wine (or bourbon in my case) around 10 pm doesn't hurt if you don't overdo it. Good luck.

TALLJAMES - There are three main problem with sleeping pills:

1. They aren't effective for everyone.

2. Even those for whom sleeping pills work, the body is quick to acclimate to them, and they lose their effectiveness fairly rapidly - with ever increasing dosages needed to get an effect

3. They are addictive - even when they don't help you sleep.

Sleeping pills may be an effective short term solution for some but I recommend that other approaches to cure the insomnia be tried before hitting the pills.
