View Full Version : your 1st call-in experience
FUNKMAN

i was driving today, listening to the show and decided to call in. Have to say i was a bit nervous, why? I'm not sure but anyway...
my first attempt i announced myself as FUNKMAN and the guy said "yeah right" and hung up on me...
the next time i said my first name and that i was FUNKMAN on the board but he didn't like my joke and hung up...
the 3rd time I guess he liked my joke cause he passed me on...
I didn't realize the delay and very faintly heard Ron say something...then I said "yeah, this is Ron or Funkman from the board" and then there was a delay and I believe Ron said "what's my joke" I said it and things got quiet(not a good sign) and that was it...
it was cool to hear myself right afterwards and them mention FUNKMAN...
Ron complained that I mentioned 2 names, Ron and FUNKMAN and said I shouldn't be using 200 names...
and that's it...
to me I felt like the guys answering the phone were a bit "cocky' for lack of a better word but I can imagine they need to be quick and don't have time for nonsense...
you just have to be ready to speak, and listen...
how did everyone else's 1st call-in go for them and are there any helpful hints for doing it more efficiently?
Tks, FUNKMAN

42nd-delay

I was in the green room once during some dead time and I asked Billy and Al what they like when people called in. Basically, they wanted people to be ready to give their name and what they wanted to talk about. I guess when you're sitting there for a few hours trying to answer 15 phone lines at once, you get a little short and impatient - don't take it personally, they just can't waste time.

My first call in experience was like yours a little. But I've NEVER had problems with ANY call screeners, in fast just the opposite. Even when I was an unknown, and I called as DEATH METAL MOE, I was treated well. And I got my balls busted a little at first by Ron and Fez too, but it was funny! But I was nervous, and probably not that funny. I continued to call, and feedback, and I've been fortunate enough to get a laugh here and there, while enjoying the show the whole time.
NOT EVERYONE is a constant contributor, but we all try. And when you get that ONE REALLY GOOD ONE, it's that much more sweet!

First time I called was when we tried to "convince" Fezzie to walk me down the aisle. The call was set up by Al, so I don't think it really counts.
I've only called in a couple of more times since then. I've never been on hold too long. But Sheepy's right-- being on hold is a scary place!

way back in august of 2000 a girl of 16 years old was having problems with a guy she liked, she happened to be talking to the guy and talking to Ron online at the same time. she was telling ron about her whole situation and Ron told her she should call in. after some thinking she decided to call in. she was on the air for about 10 minutes getting advice from different callers about her situation. she was very nervous but did quite well.
why am i talking like that, i have no idea

It was the last week of mid-day Ron and Fez, I called in asking what they were gonna do about the 3-hour tour, considering the cardholders didnt sign up for nights. It wasn't too well received, kinda just a dissappointed "ya, we know".
I then proceeded to call in constatly, especially for Oscar Blurbs. For a long stretch my "Monsters Inc. will be scaring up some Oscars" was the first clip in the Oscar Blurb jingle. I went nuts first time I heard it. Good times...

My first call in experience was good aside from my nervousness. After that, I didn't call in for a while. When I did, the call screeners hung up on me a LOT. When I finally got on the air, my time on-air sucked anyway. Now I know not to even attempt to call in anymore.

My first call was nerve-racking. I called in and Al wouldnt put me on at first and then he did and i started talking about Tenacious C and how i thought she was so hot and i would lick icing off of her. And then it preceded on to my age where soonafter Ron asked me never to call again...............

When I call in, I usually get through as "James", not "Tall_James" even though that is the name I give. But I don't fault the screeners, like someone said before, when you deal with that many callers - names with adjectives don't usually make the cut because you just want to get the callers on air as quickly as possible.
My worst experience was when I called in while I was holding my daughter. I thought she was sleeping while I was talking to the boys, but all of the sudden she started screaming...on air! Fezzie told me to stop killing the baby and I punched out quick.

Hey, I can answer this question from BOTH perspectives!
My first call was what I thought of as a prank call--their second night on the air in NY--and I was calling in to give them a URL for scat porn. Producer Guy took my call and I gave my name and the web address right up in a very gregarious, friendly manner.
While on hold I heard Ron say that he bet he could buy Gary Coleman's poop on e-bay for $60. He then immediately took my call--so I blurted out the offer to crap in a ziplock bag for $9.95; a steal! Then I gave him the web address and he pronounced me the most tasteless woman he had ever talked to.
Since then, I have screened calls for a couple of shows here. Calls come VERY fast and a screener has to make snap judgements. I will pass on callers who:
--tell right away what they want to say --are not on a crappy cell phone --are not screaming over their radio, and- --turn off their radio when I tell them, or better yet when I answer the phone. --sound lucid enough to know what the topic of discussion currently is.
But I really love when I screen a call and the first thing I hear is, "HI GINNY!"
