Mario Bros. 2 Non-Desert Theme is always a great one.

And who can beat the Tetis theme?

i'm thinking more of Castlevania 4 theme and Iron Mike Tyson Punch-out. That game kicked and the music was even better.

I always dug the music when it would come up loud on "Half-Life" while you were on a killing spree.

I was always into the original Zelda music. Resident Evil's music sets a good mood too, though.

How do you define best? I've often discussed this topic with friends. When it comes down to it, nobody will ever forget the Mario Bros theme song. Nintendo paid professional composers a shit load of money to come up with original scores for thier games...which is why titles like Zelda, Metroid, Mario Bros, Mega Man...all have unique and timeless arrangements that are so good you can listen to them without even playing them.

These were scores that defined the game...set the mood...I don't see anything like that now...too focused on blood and gore, not a lot of substance....i mean not that i mind, i like killing everything that moves. I can't live 2 days without mowing down whores in GTA 3.

I'd say Final Fantasy 3. It was so goo I ALSMOT spent like 50 bucks to get the double CD of the game's music from Squaresoft. But then I thought, CHRIST! $50 for 2 CD's? GO Fuck yourself.

Jeff you are all to silly my friend...

Games like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Metal of Honor (first and most recent) have outstanding "Scores". Now I do agree that Mario Bros. does have a distinctive "repetitive" theme to it that no one shall forget, but no way can 8-bit sequenced midi files beat 16-bit full digital orchestral music.
Times have changed.tech wise and style wise.
We as the audience no longer want to here "pigeon holed" themes. If you notice TV ads no longer have snappy little jingles to them. (some do, like coke.. But for the most part they are gone.)

So in conclusion:
Older titles had limited space for music. So the music had to be simple and aesthetically pleasant to listen to. Because that was all you had.

New titles have tons of space for music. So music can be in depth. change with the mood, and be what ever the composer wants it to be. Because that's what we, the "audience" wants.

Class dismissed

It depends on what qualifies as a musical score. Games like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Spyro the Dragon used professional composers (Harry Gregson-Williams and Stewart Copeland of Police fame, respectively) whereas other games tapped into the indie label community and sported bands (Gran Turismo 2 was a perfect example, as is Grand Theft Auto 3). If it's diegetic sound (a film term meaning sound eminating from within the scene, as if from a radio placed in an in-game world or from a "virtual band" playing) then I cannot think of any good examples. As for non-diegetic sounds (scores, background music) I'd have to say that Silent Hill 2 was very atmospheric, but didn't really have a "soundtrack" per se. It was more an amalgamation of atonal effects and triggered audio clips, interspersed with some really creepy boilerroom sounds.

Tekken 3 had some badass riffs and beats, but that was more like arena music than a score.

I'm at a loss, because I think that games usually skimp on tunes to settle on crappy midi loops rather than put some effort into what can make-or-break a games audio appeal.

Anyone?

I think for the most part videogame music has been largely forgettable. It's changing slowly as more talented people get involved in game production. As systems get more powerful, more people will embrace it as an art form similiar to film. Then you'll hear better tunes. Until then, the only ones that stick out in my mind are the Donkey Kong tunes at the beginning of a level, and maybe Jungle King. That's going way back...

Just doing her part to make the boards alot cuter

Underneath her skin and jewelry,
hidden in her words and eyes
is a wall that's cold and ugly
and she's scared as hell.
Trembling at the thought of feeling.
Wide awake and keeping distance.
Nothing seems to penetrate her.
She's scared as hell.

I am frightened to.

Wide awake
and keeping distance from my soul.
I am scared like you.
