I know that many people are in therapy and it does help at times, but could therapy and the mental health profession be accused of running a "misery business"?
I know of a few people who are in therapy for many years, they are still fucked in the head and act like whiney victims. Just look at Woody Allen. Years and years of therapy and he marries his stepdaughter.
Again, I don't want to disparage those who have had success and are working hard to overcome their problems, I'm talking about whiney "Daddy never played catch with me" types who should just suck it up and move on.

Basically I'd say yes, because it doesn't seem to help a lot of people who go. I must say though, a therapist helped me get off the bottle. If I didn't stop drinking, I'm positive something really bad would've happened.

You can say that about ANY profession..Are there Doctors who perform uneccesary tests? Dentists who drill healthy teeth? Restaraunt who serves you inferior food..the list can go and on..Yes im sure there are therapists who are not "good" and keep patients there longer than they should, or admit they are not helping the patient and refer them to another therapist. It is also the responsibility of the Patient to do a little research and realise that a certain amount of time has elapsed..but they are not making changes, so they either reavaluate their commitment or switch therapists. 'Buyer Beware' goes hand in hand with living in todays world. ut knowing what to expect from therapy before going can help you avoid using it as a crutch and staying too long. Educating people what therapy can and cannot do is a start. Realistic goals is also important.

Heckler: I know what you are saying. But, I for one, believe, that keeping traumatic stuff "in" and not talking it out is a very very toxic thing to do.

I think years ago, what you were saying was basically true, especially when most psychologists used the "Freudian" approach. That type of analysis could go on for years with the person not getting any better. But, I think, the approaches have changed alot today with more understanding of human behavior. I, for one, have seen people recover from eating disorders, addictions, panic attacks, o.c.d., etc. with proper therapy. And the drugs provided for people today are a God send for a lot of people.

By the way, I also find Woody Allen to be a very disturbing individual. I mean, besides marrying his girlfriend's daughter, Mia testified of his molesting her other child. But, just like a lot of other celebrities, people are "blinded by their stardom".

Therapy helps the vast majority of people.

Some it does not cure, but maintains (i.e. prevents from deteriorating)

Some people (the criminally insane for example) are beyond help.

Most therapists will discharge someone who they can't help or maintain, but there are some legalities that may prevent them from doing so.

As in every profession there are good therapists and bad therapists.

The good outnumber the bad and the people who are helped far outnumber those who cannot be helped.
