LANCASTER, California (CNN) -- Police issued a statewide alert early Thursday for a man in a white Ford Bronco who kidnapped a pair of teenage girls at gunpoint from a popular "lovers lane" in Los Angeles County, California.

The suspect, described as 30 to 40 years old with a medium build and dark complexion, left the scene with Tamera Brooks, 16, and Jaqueline Marris, 17, who had been in separate vehicles with male friends at a Quartz Hill parking area shortly before 2 a.m. PDT Thursday, near Lancaster, police said.

Tamera Brooks
-16 years old
-African-American
-5' 3" tall
-125 lbs.
-Black hair
-Brown eyes
-Clothes: Red shirt with a butterfly on the sleeve, dark shorts, and tan sandals

Jacqueline Marris
-17 years old
-Caucasian
-5' 4" tall
-120 pounds
-Dyed jet black hair
-Brown eyes
-Clothes: Black shirt, beige pants, and sandals

As law enforcement officials spread the search over the entire Southwestern United States, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonivich announced a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

The vehicle, a white, 1980 Ford Bronco with a gray camper shell, oversized tires and a raised suspension designed for off-road use, belonged to Brooks' friend, Joshua Brown, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Deputy Brian Lendman.

Authorities said the Bronco was the only vehicle in the parking lot when the suspect arrived at the Quartz Hill water tower -- popular with teens because of its seclusion and sweeping views of the valley below -- in a stolen Saturn. That car was reported stolen in a car-jacking in Las Vegas, Nevada, but authorities said they did not have details of that crime.

Suspect:
-30 to 40 years old
-Medium build
-Dark complexion

-1980 Ford Bronco
-White, with a gray camper shell
-Oversized tires
-Raised suspension
-Calif. license plate 1AIZ962
-Sticker on rear window: D & D Muffler.

Brown, who said he turned 18 Thursday, said that moments after he heard a car pull into the parking lot, the suspect was at his window with a semiautomatic handgun.

"He told me to give him all my money," he said. "I thought he was going to kill us."

The suspect left the girl in the truck, he said, warning her to keep her head down, tied Brown to a pole and blindfolded him. The man pointed a gun to the back of Brown's head, the young man told investigators.

"He told me he was going to kill me, but he didn't want to," he said. "He actually just wanted to tie me up. He wanted the truck. ... It sounded like he was trying to decide if he was going to kill me or not."

As the suspect was preparing to leave, Brown said, he heard another car pull into the parking lot, apparently Marris and her companion.

The companion, who identified himself as Frank, said the suspect first tried to tape the two teenagers together in the car, but when that didn't work, he taped Frank to his car seat and steering wheel and left with both girls in the Bronco.

Calif. Police Save Kidnapped Girls; Abductor Dead

LANCASTER, Calif. (Reuters) - Two teenage girls abducted from a remote spot outside Los Angeles were rescued on Thursday, after a 12-hour ordeal that included rape at the hands of their kidnapper, law enforcement officials said.

The news that Tamera Brooks, 16, and Jaqueline Marris, 17, had been raped was reported by California Attorney Gen. Bill Lockyer on CNN's "Larry King Live" program and dampened the euphoria among friends and family after the girls were found alive at about 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT).

Tamera and Jacquelin were rescued in a farming area of neighboring Kern County about 100 miles from the spot where they were taken near Lancaster after their kidnapper, identified by authorities as 37-year-old felon Roy Ratliff, crashed his stolen vehicle and fled police on foot.

He was shot dead during that pursuit under circumstances that were not immediately clear.

"That's what I'm informed by the (Kern County) sheriff," Lockyer told King in response to a question about the rape. "Our hearts are with them. It's an awful thing to have to endure. Rape survivors often have to live with a lifetime of trauma and trouble."

Earlier, friends and family members of Jacqueline and Tamera celebrated the news that they had been found alive.

"The girls are safe and the suspect is deceased," Assistant Los Angeles County Sheriff Larry Waldie told a cheering throng of friends and relatives outside the Lancaster Sheriff's station after an intensive air and ground search by hundreds of law enforcement officials.

'SAVING TWO LIVES IS REMARKABLE'

"Saving two lives is remarkable," Waldie said. "As far as I am concerned, they are safe, they are alive and they are well."

Waldie said the showdown came about 100 miles north of the abduction site when Ratliff was spotted driving a stolen white Ford Bronco along an isolated farm country road in Kern County, which abuts Los Angeles County on the north.

The Kern County Sheriff's department gave chase. Ratliff crashed the Bronco and fled on foot, leaving the two girls in the vehicle. Some reports said they were bound with duct tape and thrown in the back of the vehicle.

"He crashed the vehicle, ran away on foot and did not submit to arrest and was shot and killed," Kern County Sheriff's spokesman Chris Davis told Reuters.

With a spate of recent child abductions clearly in mind, authorities launched a massive air and ground search through remote canyon roads in the high desert north of Los Angeles shortly after learning of the abductions at about 3:30 a.m. PDT (6:30 EDT), the sheriff's department said.

They also ordered California's first "Amber Alert," a new statewide notification system that goes into effect when a child or teenager is abducted.

The alert is named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was brutally murdered while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. Although she was not abducted, it has been adopted as a warning that a child has been kidnapped.

Electronic signs on Southern California freeways, normally used to warn motorists of hold-ups head, flashed "Amber Warning. White Ford Bronco," to tell motorists a child had been kidnapped and was in a white ford Bronco.

Officials said Ratliff had a criminal record and was a fugitive on rape charges. "One can only imagine that they (the girls) are traumatized after their ordeal," a Kern County Sheriff's officer said. The teenagers ordeal began at about 1:50 a.m. PDT (4:50 a.m. EDT) when they were parked with male companions in separate cars in Quartz Hill, about 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The gunman forced them from their vehicles and threatened to kill them.

Residents of the nearby city of Palmdale said the desert area where Brooks and Marris were abducted was a place where local teenagers gathered for partie
