Aside from posting random gigs
and links, and blah blah blah...
as a true believer in independent
music, a day1 fan of Ron and Fez,
I ask this question (exclusively to
the 350 bands who have
submitted records to RF.net):
Why do you want to play the Ron
and Feztival of Rock and Ribs?
DarkHippie

no offense, but i don't think you're going to get many responces to this. only a few members of the board actually have bands in the competition. most of the other people who submit their stuff only join so that they can promote their band, and i doubt that they'll even notice this thread.
i give you credit though, you're the only person who joined because of the contest, who actually posts on other topics

I have just finished my 3 song demo with my band Penny Fiasco and i must say i couldn't be prouder. it's one thing to say you hate all the music out there, it's another thing to go create it which is what i got to do.
this contest was a perfect motivator to get me to finish our songs, and i think we kick ass. i love Ron and Fez and would do anything for the show, and to possibly get a chance to play in front of a ron and fez crowd would probably be the coolest thing i ever get to do.
even if i don't get picked, i would love to hear any feedback on my music because i know the people will be honest, i really just want my band to be heard.

I have been listening for over a year now. My band entered cause I think It would be awesome to actually get a band From DC to play up there, and show Ron and Fez that they have fans down here. even if we are 4 hours behind everyone else.
Ps. This band that entered "All Boro Kings", their members were in singed bands. Their members were in "Dog Eat Dog" and one of them was in "The Bloodhound Gang" and they are even on the german radio charts. could they be 'ringers'.

The end of that should have read "we were the fifth band up) and Ron & Fez played our cover of Kiss' C'mon and Love Me."
But um, yeah, that's our motivation.

Hey Dark Hippie, no offense
taken at all.
I started the thread in hopes a a
few non-spam (or at least more
creatively thought out spam)
posts. The results so far are
encouraging.
I have been involved in this
concept from the first time I
heard Ron Bennington say the
phrase "battle of the bands",
thinking only of what a great
opportunity it would be to get
some exposure for my band, and
others like us. The "Official"
thread was making me feel like
what started out as a good idea
was turning quite frankly, to shit.
Too many people speaking,
saying nothing. Plugging their
bands, but without giving any
incentive for me to WANT to see
what they're about. If you see
my posts on that thread you will
notice that each one was
conspicuously ignored. It was a
bummer.
I'm happy with 7 posts here.
Thanks for taking my question
seriously guys. Hopefully it will go
on for a bit longer.

The band I'm in is called UNHALLOWED. We have 2 songs up:
1 Solitude
2 In God I Disgust
We entered the Fezztival for exposure, and to WIN. I understand that a Death Metal band is probably at a disadvantage, and that the very term Death Metal will keep a lot of people from even giving our material a fair chance, but we don't mind being the underdog. The music is original, quality, and we're proud of it.
I think we have as good a chance as anyone, and will continue to fight for the top 5, and the win!

Back a few months ago when I heard Ron play your Das Phroggie CD on the air, this battle seemed like a cool idea. But Ithink it should have been for message board members only. Now It seems that everyone In NYC and beyond who has a band has entered this thing. Even if they have never heard of Ron and Fez.

As I said before, My band entered to represent the WASH DC area. I think it would blow Ron and Fez'z mind if they found out that we were from DC. And t9o show WJFK that there are R&F fans down here.

Death Metal Moe,
But how do you win? The people
running this thing don't even

Obviously they didn't expect to
get as many entries as they did.

Lets just be gratefull for
whatever exposure this has
earned us, and pray that it
doesn't come down to an online
vote. That would be bullshit.
In my humble opinion, Ron, Fez,
their staff, and the staff of RF.net
should be the soul judges of this
thing. They created this fucked

roll around in and lie in it.

Dark Hippie,
also, i just want to clarify, I did
NOT join the message board
because of the Battle of the
Bands. If you look at my profile,
you will see when I joined (April
2002), and it was right after they
did the bit on my song. That was
way before any official talk of a
contest. I only called in because I
had given Al Dukes my Press kit
when I was in studio for U Know
U need unique NY. (erole can
vouch for me on that).
Before that I was a "lurker" on
this board. I have listened to R&F
LITERALLY since the first week
they were on in NYC. That is a big
factor in my frustration over this
event. I am seeing all of my
"friends" who have bands on
Staten Island popping up on the
bands page who have no clue
about the Ron and Fez show. I
have been a fan since the
beginning, regardless of my
relatively short involvement with
RF.net.
end, scene... thank you.

You're already complaining as if you were Al Gore and you had an actual shot at something. First of all, you're complaining about a shitload of bands. Well, as I see it, I'm happy to see some kind of collective that got music to people that otherwise wouldn't have heard it, AND it was fucking free! Do I think my band will make the top 5? Who the fuck knows? Probably not, but shit man, I'm not gonna fucking cry about it or how this is being handled. If you have a better way of running it, I suggest you get your own radio show in the #1 market in the world, build a devoted fanbase and have them create a message board, and then you can figure it all out just how you like it.
Until then...

I have to say, that I have been a long time R&F listener. Even if I am not the biggest 'poster' or not a message board type person, that doesn't mean I didn't listen. I have been listening for over a year now (and I started on the overnights! Yes it was a playback - but it was when I was awake). I still listen every chance that my radio is on. I heard about the contest the day it was mentioned (we were finishing up our CD at the time). As soon as we got the product on CD and copyrighted, we sent it in and mp3'd to the moderators.
My reason for doing this? Why not? Original bands NEED exposure, and I think it's great that a NYC station is taking the initiave to promote original talent. 105.5 WDHA in NJ also promotes original music. Besides that, THAT'S IT. We're all on our own.
I am also a huge music freak, who has taken a liking, and long known, some of the acts on here. I have been listening to IDK for almost 7 years now. I think they are an incredible punk band, and I would love to do a gig with them. My band has also heard of and shared the stage with some other Jersey acts: Into Darkness, Anger Of The Lamb, Ded Effect (whom we've played with at the Wreck Room), and Osiris Rising (whom we've played with at the Stone Pony). It's great to see them on here as well or else we'd all be stuck in Jersey the rest of our lives!
I think besides the exposure the bands are getting, this is also a great way to market your tunes.
The only negative thing I feel I must point out: the word 'battle.' Who judges? Yes, I know that the songs are judged by votes. But hear me out: Lets say, a tight knit "Genre A" is pinned against a sloppy run of the mill "Genre B" band. The two sound NOTHING similiar (meaning people that like one prob wont even like the other). My question is: how can you really judge, overall, which is better?
The long winded point I am trying to make is, yes this is is judged by votes. Yes someone is going to beat someone else. But music is NOT a sport. It's not a competition. Every band on here has talent, writing an producing ORIGINAL music. Just because one band is different from another, doesn't make them any better or worse. You should work with the exposure you receive from people into YOUR genre, and hope for the best with the contest.
Anyways, best of luck to all, and I will see some of you guys on the stage soon!
Peace!
B

First of all stupid, my screen name is skidmark, not Digger Phelps, that's my band's name.
And second, who the fuck uses Yahoo search? Google's where it's at man.
But as requested, I did a Yahoo search on Be
glad ANYONE is ever even going to
hear you at all and take whatever
happens as a gift. You're already
complaining as if you were Al Gore
and you had an actual shot at
something.
A lot of stuff did come up (particularly interesting was an interview with Sylvain Sylvain), but not anything on Digger Phelps. But then again, you're request for what I search for WAS pretty stupid since it was something that I wrote. I imagine you should have said "search for Digger Phelps". Now while there wasn't much there when I did that, it was mainly for the retired basketball coach, I took into account that you were using the search engine most preferred by windowlicking retards. Now using a professional search engine like Google, entering "Digger Phelps", I receive our website as third position on the first page. Google searches 2,073,418,204 web pages, our website came up 3rd and our mp3 page comes up 4th. And considering the real person with that name is quite famous and has a lot of stuff about him on the web, that's not too bad.
I did run a search on Yahoo (SO aptly named by the way) of Das Phrogge. Yes, there's quite a bit out there alright. And good for you.
Since this whole thing started, there's been a lot of stuff that's been entered that's really good. And some stuff not so good. But I refrained from saying who was who since I was in it too, and I didn't want to be mean, and nor did I want anyone to be mean to us. But to be honest...your stuff sucks dude.
That's what made this so laughable to me that you started this rant about how the contest was being run.
Trust me, I doubt my band is gonna make the top 5 either, but I don't really care.
P.S.
You should really have used Google for your argument since Yahoo returned 52 search results for Das Phrogge and Google returned 142.
And what the F? You don't even have an mp3 page? They're fucking free for cryin' out loud.

Phroggie:
Again, I will correct you in that my name isn't Digger Phelps, it's my band's name, and I am the only one speaking to you about this so don't bring the other 3 guys in my band into it.
Not that it needs to be justified, but we recorded a KISS cover for a compilation that's going to be released, and because it was fun, and because we're fans of one of the most successful rock bands of all time.
We may not get paid for it, but it's exposure, and that's worth more than money. Not to mention it is not a bad thing to do a KISS cover now and then. Just ask Lenny Kravitz, Garth Brooks, Anthrax, Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket, The Replacements, Maynard James Keenan from Tool, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Dinosaur Jr., Stevie Wonder...the list can go on and on.
The reason I "trashed" you, was because of your badmouthing the way this is being handled like you're a little baby that's whining.
I don't see anything wrong with the way it's been handled so far. Ron and Fez were gracious enough to give some bands some airtime, including your band. And don't forget they got about an hour of a bit from one of your songs a while back. So I wouldn't complain much about how this is being run considering the exposure you've received has been more than any band in this thing.
The people

Ok, now that I am officially being
ganged up on, I would like to
make a few points.
I apoligize for my post RE the
organization of the Rock &
Ribfezt. I was wrong, and I
shouldn't have said what I said.
I'm only human, and I made a
mistake. I truely am sorry.
But it's funny how, if you look at
all of my other posts aside from
that ONE, they were all positive,
and expressing nothing but love
for Ron & Fez, and everyone
involved. And also trying to begin
dialogs about rock music (like the
one with the Richard Meltzer
"rock is dead quote. Of
course, you had no response to
any of them. Then when I
messed up and wrote a
"negative" post, you attacked me
immediately. And not really so
much in defense of R&F, but more
like personal attack on me, and
my music. I really don't think it
was called for. All because of
one post that I had already
admitted I should never have put
out there. In fact when you first
called me out on that I said in my
next post: " I shouldn't have
blathered on about 'online voting'
an all that. I talk too much i
guess..."
So listen DIGGER, does it really
satisfy you that much to tell me
my music sucks, and is ball-less,
etc.? You know nothing about
me, or my career other than two
songs up on this site, and maybe
from my band's website (which
admittedly is an unmanned piece
of junk). I don't get you, man.
I even apologize to Digger
Phelps for my swipe at thier
music, because the truth is I was
only giving my gut reaction to
having my music bashed.
Regardless of what anybody's
opinions of anyones music is up
on this site; judging from the fact
that you have upwards of 1700
posts on this board tells me
something. You spend a LOT of
time on your computer, and that
no doubt cuts into some time you
should be "shuting up, and
playing your guitar."
PS: Concerning MP# sites...what
are you talking about? In a
Google search there are several
"MP3" sites that have us on
them, with good reviews to go
with as well. "VitamanC.com" for
example one of the first 10 in the
results I believe.

Hey Phroggie, despite your tree-hugging "can't we all just get along" rants, I have a few things about your initial whine that I'd like to address.
You obviously have an agenda, because as soon as someone calls you on your shit, you start bragging about how many websites your band's name appears on. Fine, we're all entitled to get defensive, but you started this thread to avoid self-promotion, right? I haven't heard your music because this whole thing has gotten so out of hand so quickly that I can't imagine being able to hear it all, so I have no reason to attack you personally, apart from what you've posted. And that's what pisses me off...
Even though you've rescinded your original "bitch" at the way the BOTB is being run, I can't help but notice that you didn't back out of the "contest". If you truly had the scruples you claim to possess, then wouldn't you have quietly retracted your tunes and entry in the "contest"?
Then... THEN... you weasel out of the whole thing by saying "I didn't mean it" or whatever.
Dude, you're a hypocrite and (assuming what Dark Hippie says about your music is true) "ball-less".

i started the thread in hopes
bands would post (and OF
COURSE promote) more
creatively than in the other
thread. in that respect i guess it's
been a suck-cess.

Everyone on this board should be wishing each other luck instead of fighting over how this is run and who isnt going to make it ,etc. What is the deal with saying that your own band isnt going to make it into the top 5? Why would you enter a contest if you dont have enough confidence in your music to know that you can make it. If that is the case, you dont belong here. I think you should all shut up and play your guitars...Isnt that what this is all about? www.seymourglass.TV PS ..See ya at Rock and Ribs !!

My name's Goob, and I play bass in both Anger of the Lamb (149) and Sixty Miles Down (186). I am new to the board but been listening since the dot com days.
Reasons for wanting to win: 1.Exposure like this doesn't come along everyday, and 2. it'll be a good time overall (whether or not win, or if we even get in). How's that for reasoning?

Why do you want to play the Ron and Feztival of Rock and Ribs?
First post, so hi everyone. I'll ignore the noise level in this thread and try to respond to the original topic.
We have a pretty special reason to want to play in the finals at the Hard Rock - we've never played live together - in fact we've never even met, we're an Internet Band.
What a cool thing it would be to have our first meeting and make our live debut at the Ron and Fez-tival!
Thanks for the invitation to post in this topic too. I run a couple of boards myself (I don't post on them either), and there's nothing worse than people taking advantage of the admins by spamming.
We've already gotten a lot of exposure by being listed here. We appreciate it, and I've attempted to try to give something back: I was interviewed by John Montone at WINS the other day for an article about our album, and I gave a big plug to the contest. The 3 part article will air either this weekend or next.
Best of luck to everyone who entered, it's scary how much talent is out there.
Many thanks to Ron and Fez for giving local musicians a chance to be heard.
And even more thanks to Jeff and the crew here for hosting the whole thing. I can only imagine how much it must cost for the bandwidth as we all listen to the approx 500 tunes that are posted here.
One last thing.... the REAL reason we want to be in the finals is for the prestige of sharing the same stage as Moshin :)

now that i'm up there (penny fiasco, #277), i would also like to say that it's a good opportunity to hear what people think of the music i like.
i hate the radio, and i hate mtv, so i decided to write and play music i would like to hear. we're like an early 90's sound with a mean 80's heavy metal lead guitarist which is different but i think it works. hopefully you all will too.
good luck to everyone buddays!

Skid doesn't necessarily speak for the whole band. Of course we'd like to make it to the final 5. We've let everyone we've ever known or met know about this thing. I will admit that it was discouraging as this thing got out of hand (now with over 300 bands) and I figure our chances have gotten slimmer and slimmer, but that doesn't mean we'll stop trying to win. Skid's point is that we've already benefitted from being involved and that is reward enough. I don't agree. I want to play the Ron & Fez-tival, and I think we can.

I'd apologize for my previous rant, but people like Phroggie bug me.

ps FYI, Skidmark is a jaded, bitter, cynical young man. Give him a hug.

Hey psychogroupie.
indeed, let the force be with
seymour glass. one of my top five
favorite bands of all time! It'd be
nice to see them get some live
time on the NYC airwaves.
somehow, some way, we all
know the shaolin style will prevail
in the Ron and Feztival of meat
and fish.
