Do violent movies and video games have an effect of making people more violent themselves?

Nope, that's just a ignorant person's way of passing blame.

I used to play Mortal Kombat all
the time when it came out. parts
2&3 as well. I have yet felt the
urge to pull a man's spine out
and show it to him.
If some are influenced by violent
images, then they are weak
minded, probably prone to
violence in the first place, and
probably would go off while
watching Looney Toons if every
current violent show were taken
off the air.

Ugh, I am so tired of this debate. How many millions of people play violent video games and watch violent movies and out of those millions, what percentage go and act out what they have seen? Violent people are going to be aroused by some of the depictions, it's true, but the violent seed is already planted. I have played and still do play violent games and watch violent movies. I've never killed anyone, have you?

Although there is an association b/w violence and video games there is no causal relationship between the two.
This basic concept is not understood by most legislators who are anxious to find an easy target to blame social ills on.
To explain: Some people who are violent play video games so there is an association. Just as there is an association b/w cold whether and snow. But neither is caused by the other.
Removing the antecedent variable (video games) from the equation, would not change the consequent variable (violent behavior). There is no casual relationship.

i would say "some", the ones who lacked a good sum of moral guidance growing up and do not have a strong mutual respect for the "well-being" of others or themselves... It's a small % of the human race but they are real...
I hear in the new GTA coming out you will be able to commit RAPE! It will be an "adult version" To me this is not necessary and I feel I can safely say that there will be the few that get "so" turned on by this that they will not only think about doing it in real life but some will follow through on it...
there's no way to "fully" secure anything but there are some decisions that are "better" than others
Leave the RAPE out and I am sure the new GTA will still be a big hit ...

If people can't stand to not go out and do something violent then they should just steer clear of stuff like that - simple.
