I heard something about there being this new addition to the kinds of corrective eye surgery people can get now...something about an actually lens being placed permanantly in your eye...is this safe?

And how safe is the other kind of corrective eye surgery?

I don't know if I trust any corrective eye surgery... I've just heard too many bad stories about it. My dad's best friend had it done, and his vision (he was legally blind in one eye to begin with) improved dramatically.... for awhile. Sometime between six months and year following the procedure (I think it was that LASIK thing) his vision began to deteriorate rapidly... and now he's legally blind in BOTH eyes, even worse than before.

It just doesn't seem to me like any artificial material placed inside your eye would be a permanent solution to a vision problem. I mean, your contacts get dirty, right? So wouldn't anything at all they put in your eye eventually get all caked with saltiness and body fluid? (I haven't read a thing about this, I'm just talking out my ass.) JMO....

I am thinking of getting lasik eye surgery, once i get enough money I am going for it with Dr. Filatov...its cheaper in the longruneven though he charges 5000 to do it but my glasses andcontacts each time i get them is over 1000 so i might as well get it done

I'm actually nearsighted in my right eye and farsighted in my left eye. Although I'm not for laser eye surgery (too many horror stories), I wonder: could I even be a candidate for it?

I Had laser Eye Surgery performed on me a little over 2 years ago. So far I think it is the greatest thing to me. I used to have Coke Bottle glasses and was almost not eligible for the surgery. But I got it performed and it has been perfect. The 1 drawback is the nightvision you might have heard of. This is true. You will have Halos around a headlight or streetlight. This is common with most normal people, it is just a bit more extreme after the laser. It does fade away and become hardy noticible after about 6 months. I was still able to drive at night, just a bit more cautious.
As for the permanent contact placed over your eye? That dosent sound like a great idea for the longterm, IMHO. As all contact wearers know, after a few days of having your contact in, your eye gets dry. You Eye needs to breathe. I'm sure that the permanent contact takes this into effect but in the long run I see it to be more damaging to your eye. Ex... If you put a thin mask over your mouth for a few days, you will be able to breath pretty normally. Now Leave that mask on for 5 Years, there's going to be some difficulty.
Just my $.02

SUNNY - That procedure isn't so new. It's been used to treat people with various forms of corneal disease for several years.

As far as actual lasik or RK or other types of corrective eye surgeries go, the majority of people are happy with them, even though some experience chronic dryness or halo effects that never dissapear. They consider this a small price to pay for vastly improved vision.

However, a certain percentage of people who have the corrective surgery end up needing to wear glasses anyway, as the cornea actually seeks to return to it's original shape. That's why most doctors try to overcorrect, so that when the cornea stabilizes, it's at or near optimal vision.

I would NEVER get corrective surgery with current procedures b/c 1-2% of people who have lasik end up worse than they started. Some end up blind, others with permenantly blurry vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contacts.

1-2% sounds like a very small risk and it is - unless you're the 1 or 2 in 100.

The RK method is much more risky and has a much lower success rate as well. The cuts made in the cornea tend to close as well so people end up in the same position they did before. It is only an option for people with relatively decent vision anyway. The biggest risk is for chronic eye infections, as the surgery works by making cuts in the cornea that are kept open, a perfect entry point for bacteria. A small number of people with RK corrective surgery have lost their eye, when struck by an object such as a fist or tennis ball.

Time Magazine did an EXCELLENT analysis of the risks and benefits about a year or two ago. If possible, get a hold of that issue.
